Islamists Bomb Jewish/Euro Target in India Killing 8, American Implicated

Reuters makes sure to point out that the police in India are telling us "not to jump to conclusions". Okay, we won't. This isn't jumping to conclusions: violent Islamists did this. Beginning and end of story.

Probably Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), the group that brought you the Mumbai massacre, had a hand in it. You'll remember that many of the communications between Chicago's David Headley and his LeT handlers were for him to quit focusing on attacking Denmark and spend his time scoping out targets in India instead. In addition to helping do recon work for the Mumbai attacks, Headley spent time in many additional communities in India -- sometimes posing as a Jew himself in order to case Jewish targets.

Headley's passport showed that he visited Pune, the city where today's attack took place. This is a strong indication that LeT was behind the attack. While I'll admit it's speculation, the links between the LeT and Headley's visit to Pune at their behest are too glaringly obvious to overlook. Just like his "business trips" to Mumbai, odds are that Headley was in Pune with a view in mind of finding suitable targets for a terror attack by the LeT.

All of this suggests that:
a) LeT was behind the attack
b) that an American may have helped plan it.

[inserted update] A Times of India article linked by Robert Spencer (and not nearly as PC as Reuters) notes that while in Pune, David Headley stayed at the Ashram Center which is located adjacent to the restaurant which was targeted. The restaurant was frequented by the center's European visitors. /update

But if not LeT, India has its fair share of Islamist radicals. And the long border with Pakistan also make it a prime target for other Pakistani based jihad groups.

    Police said the bomb was hidden in a bag left in the German Bakery restaurant, a favorite of Jewish and European visitors, when it was full of tourists on Saturday evening.

    "We heard a big noise and we all rushed out. The impact was so much that there were tiny body parts everywhere," said Vinod Dhale, an employee at the bakery....

    Debris was strewn all around the bakery, located near an ashram or religious retreat which is also frequented by foreigners, and a Jewish center.

Reuters then goes on to explain the history of terrorist bombings in India. But then points out it could have been Hindu extremists.

At least nine people were killed Saturday in an explosion at a cafe in the western Indian city of Pune. The explosion, in which at least four tourists were among the dead, took place at the landmark German Bakery cafe in the city. At least 50 people were injured.

Speaking to reporters, Indian Home Secretary Gopal Krishna Pillai said that the explosion was caused by a package which contained ammonium nitrate fuel oil, mixed with a military-type high explosive, known as RDX, and that the attack was clearly terrorist in nature. It was the biggest terror attack in India since the attack on the Chabad center and several hotels in Mumbai fourteen months ago.

The 22 year old cafe is located just meters from the "Osho Commune," a major tourist site, and on the same street as the Pune Chabad House. Speaking to Israel Radio, Chabad House director Rabbi Bezalel Kopichik said that to the best of his knowledge, no Israelis or Jews were in the bakery at the time of the blast, and that a check of local hospitals had yielded no Israeli or Jewish victims. Most of the Israeli tourists who were staying in the area have been located, he said.

No group has yet taken responsibility for the attack, and Indian authorities have not yet named any suspects. The Mumbai attacks fourteen months ago were committed by the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group, Indian police believe, a Muslim group demanding that India relinquish control over the Jammu and Kashmir regions, surrendering them to Pakistan or establishing them as separate Islamist states.

and i dont understand why reuters and haaretz have mentioned there "even hindu militants". The only act of terrorism from hindus happened in 2006 and 2008, and both occured in Muslim dominated areas. Infact one happened outside a mosque.

Also media puts up the name of David Colemann Headly and calls him Amercian national. This guy is Pakistani origin and a Muslim. even though he was white and blue eyed, it doesnt make him amercian.

TERROR RETURNS: A man, who was injured in a bomb blast, is being treated at a hospital in Pune on Saturday.

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Saturday night said the scene of Pune’s bomb blast was very close to Osho Ashram which had been surveyed by Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Coleman Headley; the Maharashtra government had been alerted about this last October.

Making a statement to the media here, Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai said it was worth noting that the German Bakery, the site of the blast, was about 200 yards away from the ashram, which was one of the sites surveyed by Headley. The Lashkar operative visited Mumbai and other parts of the country ahead of the November 26, 2008 terror attack. Headley, an American citizen of Pakistan origin, is now in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Chicago and has been charged for planning terror attacks in Mumbai.

Mr. Pillai said the Multi-Agency Centre (MAC) had alerted the Maharashtra police about the survey done by Headley. The Home Ministry has issued an advisory to all State governments to be on “high alert” and warned citizens to refrain from opening unattended packages and report all such instances to the nearest police station or control room.

He said Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram was closely monitoring the situation from Tamil Nadu and the position was being reviewed continuously.
 
Giving details about the Pune blast, Mr. Pillai said that it “appears that an unattended package was noted by one of the waiters, and the blast occurred when he apparently attempted to open it.” He said that according to latest reports received from the State police and the Intelligence Bureau, eight people were killed in the blast and 32 injured.

The Home Secretary said a forensic team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was being airlifted from the capital to Pune. The Anti-Terrorism Squad and forensic teams of the State police had reached the site and were conducting investigations.

Replying to queries, Mr. Pillai said the investigation had just begun and added that he would comment only after completion of the forensic probe.

He refused to get drawn to another question if the blast was aimed at derailing India-Pakistan talks slated for February 25.

Sources in the security establishment said the modus operandi and the intensity of the blast indicated that the site was chosen by suspected terrorists as it was frequented mostly by foreigners and any terror incident in Pune, the fast emerging IT hub and home to a number of prestigious educational institutions, would cause substantial loss of lives and create panic among citizens. AajTak TV news is reporting and suspecting that the German Bakery restaurant was not the original target of terrorists. Rather they wanted it on Osho Ashram and Chabad House. However as it was not possible for them to enter at those places with baggages so they opted for German Bakery restaurant.
   

according to latest reports,Headley is been blamed for these attacks. He is already in FBI custody. The FBI had passed on the information 3 months back that this person had suveryed all these places for terror attacks. Inspite of knowing all this, Indian government did not enforce enough security measures. Reason? The whole security was applied to theaters for screening the Dhimmi Muslim identity movie "My Name is Khan, I'm not a terrorist". The security was given to protect the movie(from disruption by Hindu Nationalist party Shiv Sena) at the cost of civilian life.

It would have been best if the security kept away from khannats and valentines and especially on the 13th and 26th of every month because most of recent terrorist attacks have coincidentally or incidentally occurred on these dates.
