Senate Republicans 'don't get it'

A spokesman for a leading conservative economic group says if Republicans regain the majority in the Senate under their current leaders, it could "spell disaster" for the GOP.

The House Republican Conference recently passed a one-year ban on earmarks, but Senate Republicans have been reluctant to take the same step.

Andy Roth (Club for Growth)Andy Roth, vice president of government affairs at the Club for Growth, says the earmark ban was a "bold" move by House Republicans, but Senate Republicans have not followed suit because they lack leadership.

"When you look in the Senate, you've got Mitch McConnell, Lamar Alexander, Bob Bennett - all of them. Not only are they in leadership, but they're also appropriators," Roth explains.  "They're also one of the bigger offenders of earmarking, and when you don't have leadership at the top on this issue, you're not going to get anything done. And unfortunately I think it's going to hurt the Republican Party as a whole."

The government affairs vice president adds that conservatives are "desperate" to find politicians who believe in what they say and have returned to the principles of limited government and lower taxes, but unfortunately, Senate Republican leaders "don't get it" and still "believe in the big spending ways of the Bush years."
