I read somewhere that in the 1950s the state of Israel was hostile to the use of Yiddish.

Yep the national language of Israel is Modern Hebrew. The rejection of Yiddish as an alternative reflected the conflict between religious and secular forces. Many in the larger, secular group wanted a new national language to foster a cohesive identity, while traditionally religious Jews desired that Hebrew be respected as a holy language reserved for prayer and religious study. This conflict also reflected the opposing views among secular Jews worldwide, one side seeing Hebrew (and Zionism) and the other Yiddish (and Internationalism) as the means of defining emerging Jewish nationalism
Also a lot of jewish refugees found Yiddish to be a foreign language to them and communication in Hebrew made it more practical.

Very good Jnc...lol  Actually, I beleive it was the Hassidim wanted Yiddish as the Israeli national language while the German Jews wanted German.  Of course this all changed and, logically, modern Hebrew was the correct choice.  It is too bad that those who speak Hebrew now as well the ones that brought it into being do not hold faith to the ideology that produced it.   Zei gezunt une shtark!!

Nevertheless, I'm glad Hebrew is the national language of Israel, but Yiddish should not be forgotten for the sake of the memories of our ancestors...

I think it is a shame that Yiddish is not an officially recognized minority language in Israel. Sweden has granted Yiddish that status although there are few Yiddish speakers (or Jews for that matter) in Sweden.
