The Miss USA Pageant may be damaging its image.

 

The Miss USA website displays photos of this year's contestants dressed in lingerie and situated in suggestive poses that could be considered soft pornography.

"It's a terrible step backward that women would be treated once again as just objects for people to use for their own satisfaction rather than creations of God that can be held up with honor and admired for their talents...their skills, and their innate beauty," Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America (CWA), argues.

Wendy WrightShe feels this situation paints a poor picture of the contestants, whom many young women and girls view as role models.

"The Miss USA Pageant is falling in line with so much else that is coming out of Hollywood and the advertising world that the only thing that a woman can give to society or give to culture is basically selling herself as a sex object," Wright laments.

The pro-family spokeswoman believes society should be encouraging young women and girls to be feminine and have good character.

 

The CWA president also reports that some contestants refused to participate in the photo shoot, and she predicts that their decision can guarantee that the downward spiral of standards will eventually be pushing young Christian women out of the pageant.

I don't understand why any woman would want to be in a beauty pageant.  Why should a woman voluntarily parade her scantily clad self in front of a bunch of male judges?  Now don't get me wrong.  I'm not some crazy feminist who says women shouldn't care about their appearance.  But why the need to parade themselves in front of strangers for approval?

I believe it developed out of Hellenistic culture... The cult of 'Beauty' which stresses physical features and quite a bit of exposed skin. The Greek concept of beauty required the participants to compete completely naked, as did the Greek sports {even the olympics was original played in the nude}.

The Greek hellenistic ideas fly in the face of basic Jewish decency...

Beauty as Ideal

Greek culture placed the highest value on the physical and gave the world the idea that beauty is, in itself, a supreme ideal. Epitomizing this worship of the physical was the Greek passion for athletics. Among their first actions, the Greeks built gymnasiums in every city they conquered. The Greek athletics were held in the nude, highlighting the beauty of the human being. This physical glorification is one example of the Hellenistic view of nature as supreme. The attitude that the greatness of the human being ruled over the belief in the power of their gods, culminated in Plato's view that there was a Divine creation, and and then the world was left to run itself.

Judaism views the physical body as a partner with the soul. Humankind was created from the physical and from the spiritual (And the L-rd G-d formed the human being of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Genesis 2:7). This dual level of creation distinguishes humans from animals (completely of the lower world) and angels (completely of the upper worlds), neither of which have free-will. It is the Jewish belief that people must work throughout their lives to synthesize the physical and the spiritual. Finding this balance is, in Judaism's view, true beauty. Since the Jewish view is that humankind was created in the image of G-d (Genesis 1:27), it is impossible to come to a conclusion that a human may supplement the Divine.

But all this is not surprising in light of the fact that the Olympics is rooted in ancient Greece. The Greeks worshipped the human body and nothing more important to them existed outside of it.

But there is an even darker side of the Greek value system. Narcissistic idolization of the body leads to egocentricity and, finally, to violent behavior. The ancient Greeks represented the epitome of culture and philosophy, but at the same time were unspeakably cruel and barbaric. Athens and Sparta were both military societies constantly at war: plundering, capturing slaves, and holding scant regard for human life. Even to their own people they exhibited cruelty, as demonstrated by the ancient Spartan custom of abandoning weak and deformed infants to die in the woods.

This dichotomy in which terrible cruelty can coexist with art and beauty has a modern day parallel especially relevant to Jews. There is an ugly reality lurking behind the glitzy facade of the modern Olympics. In 1936, well after Hitler began his vicious persecution of the Jews, the International Olympic Committee had no problem allowing the Olympics to take place in Nazi Germany. Nor did any country boycott the Olympics because of Germany's brutal treatment of the Jews.
