The suspect in the attempted bombing of Times Square received $12,000 from the Pakistani Taliban to carry out the plot, according to a federal indictment released Thursday that formally charges Faisal Shahzad with receiving training and support from the militant group.

The indictment includes 10 separate charges, double the number of counts in the initial criminal complaint that was filed against Shahzad three days after a Nissan Pathfinder packed with explosives was left smoldering in one of the busiest intersections in New York.

"The facts alleged in this indictment show that the Pakistani Taliban facilitated Faisal Shahzad's attempted attack on American soil," Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said in a written statement.

The new charges accuse Shahzad, 30, of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, of being armed with a high-tech 9-millimeter rifle and of committing an act of terrorism "transcending national boundaries." According to the document, he received training in the Pakistani region of Waziristan in December from "explosive trainers affiliated with Tehrik-e-Taliban," an alternate name for the militant group.

Six of the counts against Shahzad carry maximum penalties of life in prison. For two of the charges, a life term is the minimum. The indictment was issued by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York.

The document offers little new information about the plot, aside from details of alleged payments of $5,000 and $7,000 Shahzad is said to have received in two transactions from a person in Pakistan affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban. The first payment was collected Feb. 25 in Massachusetts, and the second about two weeks later in Ronkonkoma, N.Y.


 U.S. officials declined to identify the alleged accomplice or to say whether he was in custody in Pakistan.

Three U.S. residents suspected of helping funnel money to Shahzad were arrested by federal authorities in Massachusetts and Maine last month on immigration violations. A Justice Department official said none of the three had been charged in connection with the Times Square plot.

Shahzad, a Pakistani native who lived in the United States for nearly a decade before becoming a U.S. citizen, was taken into custody May 3 at John F. Kennedy International Airport while trying to board a flight to Dubai.

I just cannot understand how all these years after 9/11 muslims are still able to funnel money into USA for terrorist activities.

Also note that mussies in the mid-west are still up to their old tricks raising money for Hamas and Islamic Jihad. So much for all this talk of cracking down on the ability of terrorists to finance their operations.

Obama to ensure pillar of Islam, zakat, easier

Translation. Obama will make funding the jihad easier. At least according to Muslim sources.

Here’s a little background on zakat from “Fiqh az-Zakat: A Comparative Study,” by Yousef al-Qaradawi, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood (whom Obama invited to his speech and apparently met with in the White House):

“The most honorable form of jihad nowadays is fighting for the liberation of Muslim land from the domination of unbelievers, regardless of their religion or ideology. The communist and the capitalist, the Westerner and the Easterner, Christian, Jew, pagan or unbeliever, all are aggressors when they attack and occupy Muslim land. Fighting in defence of the home of Islam is obligatory until the enemy is driven away and Muslims are liberated.”

“The most important form of jihad today is serious, purposefully organized work to rebuild Islamic society and state and to implement the Islamic way of life in the political, cultural and economic domains. This is certainly most deserving of zakat. ”

Another Islamic source, former Muslim Chaplain at George Washington University, enlightens us on jihad and how financial support (including zakat) is a form of jihad. From a six part lecture entitled The Constants of Jihad: (note: video was removed – related Anwar al-Awlaki videos here)

To be clear, according to Islamic sources, the sharia even, financial support for the fighters of jihad is part of jihad, and fighting the unbelievers is most deserving of zakat.

Barack Obama stated contributing zakat was made harder for Muslims after 9/11 yet the reality is contributing directly to Islamic “charities” that directly funded Islamic terrorists was made a little harder. However, we know U.S.-based Islamic group Al Maghrib recently facilitated an online fundraiser for U.S. citizens to directly fund Hamas in Gaza, so it’s not nearly as hard as Obama claims.  Yet now Obama is going to ensure that fulfilling zakat, and hence jihad, is easier and he announced that to the entire Muslim world, including the Muslim Brotherhood, Hizbollah, Hamas, Al Qaeda, Hizb, and any other Islamic group who wants to funnel U.S. dollars to the jihad.
