Jewish Culture, of Course...

Though in my old days I enjoyed the Rock'N'Roll culture a little..

You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities
Duet 16:13-14

Well, now that you ask...

I have been listening to an Israeli Band Amaseffer... Unfortunately they don't have much material except for this Heavy Metal CD about Exodus named "Slaves for Life"...

I also like traditional Jewish music which is played on several of the Internet radio stations I listen to.

Of course I like Matisyahu and Shlomo Carlebach...

Just a sample of the lyrics from Amaseffer "Slaves for Life" album:

http://lyrics.wikia.com/Amaseffer

Song : Birth of Deliverance

[Hebrew text]
- "Every born son you shall cast into the Nile" [Exodus 1:22]-

Many sleepless nights
Far too many troubled days
The prophets are grim at thought
(The oracles have spoken)

Dark and gloomy eyes
Turned hellish red in mind
(Every born son you shall cast into the Nile)

And I know for sure
That they won't endure
Something's got to give
They will crumble down

Show them no remorse
Make them feel the pain
Spill the blood of every son
For this is not in vain

Be silent my child
Be silent my child
Your tender cry
Visions in your eyes

And I won't let go
No I won't let go
Embracing you
My Child
Stay with me

[Hebrew text]
- "And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses,
Whom the lord knew face to face, in all the signs and the wonders,
Which the Lord sent to him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh,
And to all his servants, and to all his land, and in all that mighty hand,
And in all the great terror which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel"
[Deuteronomy 34:10-12]-

Distant sound of evil
Getting closer with each step
Must hide before they reach
(Quick) Hide before they breach

I know that they look for you
You're safe with me
God holds your hand

Silent screams
For if they hear us it will be
The end of his life

I'll sacrifice myself
For you, my child
I'll sacrifice my soul

My gracious God
Please send me an angel
With crystal white wings
Which under it we safely abide

No evil can harm us
Holy savior
Protector of kingdom of heaven
I'm calling your name...

Hear me!

I've seen the light shining from above

[Hebrew text]
- "The Lord make his face shine upon thee" [Numbers 6:25]-

I've seen the light shining from above

[Hebrew text]
- "And she took for him an ark of bulrushes and put the child therein,
And she laid it in the flags by the river's brink." [Exodus 2:3]-

Hush my baby don't you cry
My love for you is eternal
Like the everlasting fire
You light up the darkest corner of my soul

God please, God please hold his hand
Protect him from our sins
Show your grace
Bless the child

Watch him from a far
As he floats along the Nile
Aimlessly drifting
Washed away with all my tears
My sorrow
My pain

A tear drop falling
Ripples my reflection
And I can't let go

As far as non-Jewish stuff...

"The Gallic Wars" and "The Civil War", two books written by Julius Caesar.

"The Art of War", a book written by Sun-Tzu.

"Rule of the Bone", a book written by Russell Banks.

"Neuromancer", a book written by William Gibson. [I like many of his works]

I like Science-Fiction in many different forms.  Horror movies too, to a lessor extent.

Sometimes I like Classical music, I grew up playing the piano and my brother played the cello, my Mom played the flute...

I enjoy Sitar music a lot.  I had a nice collection on my portable hard drive but I have not hooked it up in many months.

I suppose there are more things I could add, but none seem to come to mind.  I like a lot of Jewish culture things as well but it would take me a lot more time to compile a list like that.
"You must keep the arab under your boot or he will be at your throat" -Unknown

"When we tell the Arab, ‘Come, I want to help you and see to your needs,’ he doesn’t look at us like gentlemen. He sees weakness and then the wolf shows what he can do.” - Maimonides

“I am all peace, but when I speak, they are for war.” -Psalms 120:7

"The difference between a Jewish liberal and a Jewish conservative is that when a Jewish liberal walks out of the Holocaust Museum, he feels, "This shows why we need to have more tolerance and multiculturalism." The Jewish conservative feels, "We should have killed a lot more Nazis, and sooner."" - Philip Klein

I forgot to mention my 'favorite movie' of all time...

I am a big Blade Runner fan...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_runner

Quote
Blade Runner is a 1982 American science fiction film, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, and Sean Young. The screenplay, written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples, is based loosely on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. The film depicts a dystopian  Los Angeles in November 2019 in which genetically engineered organic robots called replicants—visually indistinguishable from adult humans—are manufactured by the all-powerful Tyrell Corporation as well as other mega manufacturers around the world. Their use on Earth is banned, and replicants are exclusively used for dangerous, menial or leisure work on Earth's off-world colonies. Replicants who defy the ban and return to Earth are hunted down and "retired" by police special operatives known as "blade runners". The plot focuses on a brutal and cunning group of recently escaped replicants hiding in Los Angeles and the semi-retired blade runner, Rick Deckard, who reluctantly agrees to take on one more assignment to hunt them all down, while searching for his own identity.

With all due respect I think to pretend that modern Jewish culture was not influenced by its long stay in Europe and other exile areas of the world would be wrong. There were wonderful Jewish composers of European-style classical music as well. Do you think King David ate bagels or gefilte fish? What about Muman's favorites, Jewish rap and heavy metal? I understand why some Jews despise the West and the horrors that were perpetrated on the Jewish people by Western people, but I think it's wrong to say that your own culture is purely Jewish with no other influences. The exile was far too long for that.
