What is the big deal?
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:03:04 AM »
Guys, please help. What is the big deal where LeBron James goes? We're in a major depression here, unemployment sky-high, an ayatollah who doesn't give two poops about this country.... A shvug touches a ball, G-d forbid he touches a book, and we're supposed to care?!!!

I'm not sure we or anyone is "supposed to" care, but thousands/millions of basketball fans do care, so the media caters to that.   Yeah, it really makes no difference.

Btw this is also part of how David Stern turned the almost bankrupt company he inherited into a billion dollar entertainment business.  This type of media circus and personality cults built around the star players is by design to feed the coffers and line his pockets.   Got to give him credit for business savvy, although the sport has become cheapened and many people suspect foul play and fixing along the way to build up certain team dynasties and superstars.  Donaghy, the ref that was suspended for gambling on nba games blew the whistle on a fix of game 6 of the 2002 western conference finals - it was fixed by the refs so that the lakers would win to generate more money for david stern (with or without his knowledge).   They tried to turn donaghy into a villain when the gambling story came out because they want him discredited so no one will believe the things he reveals about dirty refs and nba officials who manipulate the game for profit.

LOL, coincidentally I just read that MSG stock futures are way up.  (MSG is knicks parent company)  MSG up $1.23, with 5.9 times normal daily volume.   And even higher in after-hours trading.   The rumor is that he has chosen the ny knicks.    Sounds like some insider trading going on there along with that!   Somebody couldn't keep a secret.
