What's the evidence that they were corrupt?

Historically, the family was not only wealthy but were big philanthropists, and much of the building in the yishuv leading up to the state of Israel was enabled with funding from various members of the Rothschild family.

What is actually lamentable about them is that they ended up intermarrying in recent generation(s) and turning their backs on the Jewish people.  But in the past, they were a family of benefactors from what I have read.

Victor Rothschild was an self hating anti-Semitic Jew [who worked against Jews in the Holocaust!], most of the other ones were not and even were benevolent in some cases.  Asking Chaim about the Rothschild family on Ask JTF might produce an interesting answer.
