Stray Dogs Used as Suicide Bombers

The poor, dead dogs.

It happened two years ago, but was just recently uncovered.

A French newspaper -- Paris Le Figaro -- recently revealed the foiled Al-Qaeda plot.  Two stray bulldog-type canines from the streets of Baghdad were abducted.  Bombs with detonators were surgically implanted, albeit crudely, into the poor creatures.  They were placed in air flight kennels and sent to Baghdad Airport for delivery to the United States.  Intelligence agencies believe the intent was to blow up the flight once it was airborne.

Unfortunately for the dogs -- but fortunately for everyone else -- the bomb-filled bulldogs died as a direct result of the butchered procedure before the flight took off.  Thanks to the observation of soldiers in the cargo section of the airport, the dead strays were sent for a necropsy, which is when the bombs were discovered.

Apparently photos of them post-mortem and the bomb findings were circulated to intelligence agencies to warn of yet another method Al-Qaeda came up with to wreck havoc.

Dogs traveling from Iraq to the U.S. are not uncommon.  There are several animal welfare organizations that rescue stray animals from Iraq to be re-homed in the States.  Far from home, a stray dog can warm a soldier's heart.  Although military policy discourages service members adopting pets while deployed on duty, some have arranged for the dogs or cats to be sent to their family back home.

The idea of using innocent animals as a bomb receptacle is not surprising for terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda.  After all, the group is able to convince members to use their own bodies as suicide bombs against innocent civilians.  The difference: a person has a choice to sacrifice themselves for their cause by becoming a suicide bomber.

A dog does not.
