A New York City construction worker who witnessed the 9/11 terrorist attacks thinks it's "absolute madness" that the developers of the proposed "Ground Zero" Islamic center have applied for a $5 million federal grant to build their "victory mosque."

Following those attacks more than nine years ago, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation set aside $17 million for the community and cultural enhancement program to provide funding to rebuild the area surrounding the 9/11 attacks. But it was recently revealed that the developers of what is now being called the "Park51" project have applied for $5 million of that money to fund their mosque project.

Andy Sullivan, a lifelong New York City construction worker and founder of the 911 Hard Hat Pledge, reacts to that news.

Andy Sullivan (911 Hard Hat Pledge)"Is that not the most audacious act you've ever seen? This is not only adding insult to injury, it's saying, 'Hey, we know this is hurtful; we know this is almost sacrilegious to you, and guess what -- we're going to make you pay for it now, too,'" laments Sullivan. "This is putting the dagger in your heart, twisting it, and then putting another one in there. It is absolute madness."

The Hard Hat founder of the group that is working to prevent the mosque's construction at the proposed site considers it fortunate that the grant request is unlikely to be approved because that money usually goes toward finishing or assisting ongoing projects -- not starting new ones.
