Russia Unveils AK-12 Assault Rifle

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2012/01/26/kalashnikov-ak-12-unveiled/

I think this looks to be a very good weapon. It somewhat resembles a Galil. If it's at all like previous Kalashnikov family weapons, it's likely to be more reliable than anything the west produces. Accuracy of course will be a big question.

Galil is an Israeli immitation of ak47 that fires nato rounds. But the new kalach doesn't strike me as a great improvement especiallly in terms of weight and material. They claim it has an improved barrel so perhaps it would be a bit more accurate, especially the ones adopted to nato rounds.

They had only one real break through and that was AK-47. All other variants of AK's combined can not surpass the total sold out numbers of AK-47.

I don't think there are very many true AK47s (angled rear receiver, machined construction, sloping wooden stock). I thought that the vast majority of AKs are AKMs, Type 56s, AK74s, and derivatives.

Ak47 was used by the vietkong and just about any other marxist revolutionaries around the world. I think the 74 is a post vietnam war model starting 1974.

Yes it uses the smaller round. I still think there are many more of them than true, old-school AK47s. Most of what are called AK47s are actually the simplified, perfected AKM (cheaper to manufacture receiver) or various Chinese- or locally-made knockoffs.

'The World Bank estimates that out of the 500 million total firearms available worldwide, 100 million are of the Kalashnikov family, and 75 million are AK-47s.[47]'

The World Bank has seldom been known as a firearms authority.
