This week we are reading the portion of the Torah named Matot-Massei. In this portion we learn the laws concerning annulling vows we make. Then the story of the affliction of the Midianites for their spiritual assault on the men of Israel, whose women debased themselves in order to get the Jews to worship idols.
The Torah tells us that two tribes, Gad and Rueven desired to settle the land on the east of the Jordan river. This angered Moshe because he felt they were backsliding and were afraid to go into the promised land. But after agreeing to lead Israel in battle against the caananites Moshe acquiesced to their request.
Then we are told of all of the 42 encampments that the Jewish people made in the desert. There are sages who say that we all go through 42 stages in our lives. The laws of establishing cities of refuge are discussed which allow one who accidentally kills another to be protected from vigilante justice.
