There are some aspects of the modern Western world that all the world could benefit from (sanitation, medical advances, etc.) but forcing democracy on a society which doesn't want it isn't really a good idea. Consider that given the choice, third worlders will elect a group like Hamas into power. Some groups are not ready for that kind of society, and they don't want it, and they will resent it even more if it seems to be coming from outside rather than from within. I think Americans seem to be under the flawed idea that all human beings somehow strive inside to want to be like us. Good for the American ego, but it doesn't really match reality.
I think that every country has the right to pursue its own destiny, including Israel to pursue hers, and to defend herself. We should of course be concerned about human rights, and we should not trade on such a high level with countries like China that have severe human rights violations, but getting the USA out from under China's power is easier said that done at this point. I would hope a series of good presidents could do it gradually to where we don't need China's cheap labor or toxic goods.
