Petition by
Brooklyn College United4Israel
As concerned students at Brooklyn College and members of the BC community, we want to express our deep concern over the fact that an event entitled "BDS Movement against Israel," which is scheduled to take place on our campus on February 7, is being co-sponsored by BC's Political Science Department, along with several other virulently anti-Israel student and community organizations that support the boycott of Israel.
The event features Omar Barghouti, the founder of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, and Judith Butler, a professor at the University of California who has supported numerous campaigns to boycott Israel, including the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. Both Barghouti and Butler are publicly on record calling for the elimination of the Jewish state.
There is no doubt that the purpose of this event is to promote campaigns to boycott Israel, campaigns which the U.S. Department of State considers to be anti-Semitic, and the Jewish community considers to be an assault on the Jewish people. This event cannot help but promote hatred towards the Jewish state and hostility towards the vast majority of Jewish students at BC who identify with the Jewish state.
We are outraged that BC's Political Science Department is sponsoring an event which promotes hatred of the Jewish state and its supporters. We believe that the department's sponsorship serves to condone and legitimize anti-Jewish bigotry, and that it will contribute significantly to a hostile environment for Jewish students on our campus.
We, the undersigned, call on the Political Science Department to rescind its sponsorship of this hateful, hurtful and discriminatory event.
