Why do secular Israelis name their sons Nimrod?
« on: March 04, 2013, 02:27:45 AM »
I was by a bris by one of my secular neighbors a year or 2 ago & they named the kid Nimrod.
Iasked the father what will you name the next kid?
Hitler or Haman?
He was somewhat perplexeded & annoyed at my question & I explained that Nimrod wanted to kill Avraham Avinu.
So naming a kid Nimrod is no different than G-d forbid naming a kid Hitler or Haman.

Dont ask me.... Sounds quite dumb...

You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities

I thought Nimrod was the founder of the Babylonian mystery religions/occultism too. It sounds like a very bad name for a child. I don't know why anyone would want to name their child that unless they're into occult practices.

lol, so what was his reaction after you explained that?

Secular Israelis think Nimrod was a "biblical hero" since his name is in the Torah.  They have no idea who he actually was.  It's very funny that they name kids nimrod.  hilarious in fact.

I don't believe we consider him to have any connection to occult.   But he was a bad guy.

First time I ever heard anyone Jewish name their kid, Nimrod.
If someone says something bad about you, say something nice about them. That way, both of you would be lying.

I know a lot of secular Israelis and not once have I ever heard that name given.  But whatever.  Here in the United States, even in my own immediate family, some children are given gentile names unfortunately.  My wife and I have decided that we give our children Hebrew names which have a positive message or are named after biblical good guys.

If I were to recommend baby names to Jews, I would recommend this.

The name Nimrod reminds me of the word, "[censored]".   ;D

About 80  years ago there began  a movement of so  called "Zionists" who
wanted to  redefine the  Jewish people  and recreate us  as a  nation of
Hebrew speakers  who live in  the land of  Israel. They leaders  of this
movement were atheists and they  wanted to detach the connection between
religious identity and nationality.  They were nicknamed "Canaanites" by
their opponents as a  mockery but in the end many  of them embraced this
name  themselves. Nowadays  the continuation  of the  "Canaanites" is  a
movement in Israel  that wants to set an  official "Israeli" nationality
which is disconnected from religion. There are a couple of Arabs who are
part of this campaign.

The more  mainstream "Zionists" like  Ben-Gurion didn't want  to discard
the Jewish identity entirely but they  also wanted to see the rebirth of
the Jewish people as a nation  defined by borders and language first and
foremost and with a secular socialist culture.

Anyway to  all those  who tried  to reinvent the  Jewish nation  of both
groups it seems like a good idea  to use un-Jewish Hebrew names from the
bible.  That was  their  point, to  show they  are  Hebrew speakers  not
Jewish.

But after  several decades what  happened is  that Nimrod just  became a
standard name and most likely anyone who was born in ~1970 or later with
that name, his parents most likely just picked it because they liked the
name and were not trying to make a political statement.

The same is true with Omri. Sharon named his son Omri and he stays true to his name sake.

Nimrod also means "a slow-witted person."  Only a Nimrod would name his son Nimrod!

Feiglin says there are one million Israeli living in the USA alone so what does it means? Does he  imply Israel's authority is manipulating numbers not saying the truth about the exact number of Jews in Israel, that actually hilonim are  leaving massively Israel but refuse to reveal this figure for propaganda purpose....

For all the good ive seen kiruv things do for me and others that are serious, if all it does is changes the future kid's name from Alex to Nimrod, maybe the focus shouldn't have been so concentrated on identity only.

They don't know that Nimrod was evil since they don't know the Oral Torah. They just think he was mighty from the text in Parashat Noah.
