MK Rabbi Shai Piron, who is number two on the Yesh Atid list, and has been mentioned as a possible candidate for education minister, was put on the defensive today for advising someone on a religious internet forum in 2002 during the second intifada not to sell his house to an Arab, Army Radio reported Tuesday.

Possible Yesh Atid candidate for education minister says advice was halachik answer, and it doesn't represent his views.
Can someone clear things up? Does he no longer view himself as an Orthodox Rabbi and therefore grants himself the "right" to contradict Halachik positions? :'( Or is there some way to interpret what he said in a more favorable light? Or was the newspaper wrong in its report?

Surely looks like he is in a bind... I cannot see how an Orthodox Rabbi would contradict Halacha... But religion and politics are 'strange bedfellows' and sometimes a politician needs some wiggle-room and this may be his way of making the question go away...

You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities

I m surprised he said the correct Halacha to begin with. Truly a disgrace that he is in ein arid. Sadly we will probably continue to see some of these people behave like dogs on a leash following their masters.
.   ד  עֹזְבֵי תוֹרָה, יְהַלְלוּ רָשָׁע;    וְשֹׁמְרֵי תוֹרָה, יִתְגָּרוּ בָם
4 They that forsake the law praise the wicked; but such as keep the law contend with them.

ה  אַנְשֵׁי-רָע, לֹא-יָבִינוּ מִשְׁפָּט;    וּמְבַקְשֵׁי יְהוָה, יָבִינוּ כֹל.

He is claiming he never said that.  He claims he's a big lib when it comes to the arabs and would NEVER say such things as are being quoted in his name.

I am ashamed of those who thought a Yesh Atid "Rabbi" would be rightwing and against the enemies of the Jewish people.     Please can we use some common sense and be realistic?   Can we not chase after every media-created delusion under the sun?

Are you saying he is claiming he never wrote the posting on the Internet regarding the halachic opinion that a Jew should not sell Jewish land to an arab?

I would never believe a Yesh Atid Rabbi would have ever been considered right-wing...

Yes.  He did claim that he never said those things.   He's actually claiming that he was arguing strong against that position which is now being quoted in his name as a way for leftists to attack him.    He is trying to tell the leftists, you are making a mistake, I'm on your side and you're quoting my opponents.   What a sicko.

You bet.... Any Orthodox Rabbi who turns his back on Halachic decisions made to ensure Jewish survival is a dishonest actor.

It is a sad state of affairs our current generation of rabbis except for a few...
