English Defence League (EDL) leader Tommy Robinson has been arrested on suspicion of obstructing police as he made his way to Woolwich barracks.

As the UK begins its Armed Forces Day celebrations, Mr Robinson was taken into custody as he attempted to go to lay flowers for murdered Drummer Lee Rigby.

Co-leader of the EDL, Kevin Carroll, was also arrested as the group attempted to enter the London borough of Tower Hamlets on the way to Woolwich.

Earlier, police had warned EDL supporters they could be arrested if they breached police enforced conditions on the march.

The group had announced plans to walk across east London via the East London Mosque and assemble near where Drummer Rigby was hacked to death in broad daylight last month.

A witness told Sky News: ‘They’d walked six miles when they were arrested outside Aldgate East underground station.

‘The EDL leaders had been warned not to go past a large mosque in east London or enter the borough of Tower Hamlets.

‘As police officers tried to deal with the situation the EDL leaders continued to walk forward and then a senior policewoman placed the pair under arrest.’

Reacting to the Met’s decision on the march, Mr Robinson said earlier: ‘The police are enforcing no-go zones for non-Muslims. It’s a charity walk with two people taking part.

‘When has a Muslim charity walk ever been made to have conditions?’

As well as laying flowers, Mr Robinson and his co-leader Kevin Carroll had planned to walk to raise money for a young girl fighting against neuroblastoma.

But police said the march and gathering would ‘result in serious public disorder and serious disruption to the life of the community’.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: ‘At approximately 11.25am today, two men were arrested outside Aldgate East station for obstructing police.

‘They have been taken to a south London police station.

‘Two further men were arrested on suspicion of assault.

‘They have been taken to an east London police station.’

Earlier this month, the police banned the British National Party (BNP) from marching from Woolwich Barracks and ordered it to move its protest to Westminster.
