Scotts (paticularly the highlanders from the islands) were always Britain's fiercest and meanest soldiers. Those kilts could come from the tunics worn by the Israelites. There's also something about a large body of water separating the lost tribes from the rest of Israel.

The old kilts were a real big thing that covered the whole body and carried their supplies and served as tents. Underneath, the scotts would have their whole bodies covered in that blue dye.
