Jap cars are the best value.
They retain their value better than American cars, and if you check out reliability and customer satisfaction ratings, Toyota and Honda lead the way.
Yacov made a good point about who is assembling American cars. Schvartzas and Mooozies. While it is true that robotics dominate assembly lines these days, fit and finish on Jap cars are generally better than American vehicles. Keep in mind though that many Jap cars are assembled in America. To ensure that you get a Jap brand vehicle assembled by human beings, simply check the VIN number on the car you're contemplating buying. If the VIN number starts with a '1' it was assembled in the USA, if it starts with a 'J' it was built in Japan.
Japanese quality control is excellent, even the shroogs working the assembly line can't screw up a well engineered car when monitored properly.
As I mentioned earlier, one important factor in buying a vehicle is giving consideration to what it's resale value will be when you decide to get something newer. Japanese vehicles definitely retain their value better than their American counterparts.
