In Rosh Hashanah (16b) the Gemara tells us that we repeatedly blow the Shofar (ram's horn) on Rosh Hashanah, although the Torah requires us to blow it only once, in order to "confound the Satan." In what away does blowing the Shofar confound Satan and prevent him from interfering with our pleas for mercy? Tosafot, citing Midrashic sources, explains as follows. In the End of Days, Hashem will "slay the Angel of Death" (Yeshayah 25:8). The coming of the End of Days will be signaled by a loud, long Shofar blast (Yeshayah 27:13). When Satan, who doubles as the Angel of Death, hears our long series of Shofar blasts, he is immediately gripped by the fear that his time has come. Because of this, explains the Midrash, he keeps a low profile until after we finish our prayers.

When the Torah was given on Mt. Sinai, it was accompanied by a series of extremely loud Shofar blasts (Shemot 19:16,19). Perhaps these Shofar blasts, like those of the Shofar of Rosh Hashanah, "frightened the Satan away" so that he would not intervene and prevent the Torah from being given.

The Shofar of Rosh Hashanah actually has good reason to cause the Satan distress. Rambam writes (Hil. Teshuvah 3:7), "Although we blow the Shofar [on Rosh Hashanah] simply because the Torah directed us to do so, there is an implied lesson in the Torah's directive. The blast of the Shofar is telling us, "Wake up from your slumber! Review your deeds, repent, and remember your G-d in heaven! Look out for yourselves and change your ways!" Satan has no power over us when our attitude is one of repentance and G-d- fearingness, he is effectively rendered impotent by our Shofar blasts.

In fact, the "slaughter of the Evil Inclination" (Sukah 52a), or the "slaughter of the Angel of Death" (Yeshayah 25:8) at the End of Days may be allegorically explained in a similar fashion. When the Final Redemption takes place, "the world will be filled with the fear of heaven as the sea is filled with water" (Yeshayah 11:9). All will be able "point to the Presence of Hashem with their finger and say, 'This is my G-d!'" (Yeshayah 25:8; Ta'anit 31a). At that time, nobody will be tempted to sin since the presence of the Creator, and the consequence of sin, will be evident to all. Effectively, the Evil Inclination will have been slaughtered.

This process begins with a loud Shofar blast. When a king travels, a loud trumpet fanfare precedes the king's arrival. When Hashem reveals His Presence for all to see, it will also be preceded by the Shofar blast of the End of Days. That blast will bring an end to the Satan and the Evil Inclination.

confuse and "appease" are different things.

The Kitzur Shulchan Aruch gives different reasons for Tashlich (or as you spelled it Tashlikh)
Here is a summary. To recall the binding (Akeida) of Yitzchak that according to one midrash when Avraham (Abraham) went with Yitzchak (Isaac) to fulfill this very difficult request by G-d, the accuser (Satan) made himself like a river and Avraham went through the river up to his neck (in water) to continue on in his difficult mission to do G-d's will.
A second reason he brings is that Kings were annointed by rivers and we are symbolically participating in the coronation of a G-d as king of the world on Rosh Hashana.
Still another explanation is that it is a symbolic act to encourage us to remember to toss away our sins by repentance and examining our ways.

I do not know what is the Sephardic attitude towards Tashlich. Ashkenazim in general perform the Tashlich service, however if I remember correctly, the Vilna Gaon thought Tashlich causes a waste of time from Torah Study

The reason I do Taschlich is because of the reasons given, to cast away the sins of the last year. It is a custom which we do at the shore of a body of water. I have not listened to mp3 podcasts in a while so you could explain what the Rabbi says.

Tashlich comes from the Hebrew word meaning "to cast," referring to the intent to cast away our sins via this meaningful and ancient Jewish custom common to both Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities.

Tashlich is usually performed on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. If the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, Tashlich is done on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. It may be performed up until Hoshanah Rabba (the last day of Sukkot), as some communities are anyway accustomed, except on Shabbat.

Special verses are recited next to a body of water, such as a sea, river, stream, lake or pond, preferably one that has fish (though when no such body of water was available, some rabbis were known to do Tashlich next to a well, even one that dried up, or next to a bucket of water). Upon concluding the verses, the corners of one's clothes are shaken out; for males, this is usually done with the corners of the tallit katan (tzitzit garment).

Though Tashlich is not mentioned in the Talmud, its earliest reference appears to be in the book of the Prophet Nehemiah (8:1) which states, "All the Jews gathered as one in the street that is in front of the gate of water." This gathering is known to have taken place on Rosh Hashanah.

Many reasons are given for this custom:

* One reason for saying Tashlich next to water goes back to Abraham's trip to sacrifice his son, Isaac, which took place on Rosh Hashanah. On the way to the designated location, the Satan tried several times to undermine Abraham's progress. One of the Satan's tricks was to have a river materialize and block Abraham's path. Undeterred, Abraham forged on straight into the river followed by his small entourage. Upon reaching the middle of the river when the water reached his neck, Abraham prayed to G‑d and the river dried up. We commemorate the self-sacrifice of Abraham by going to a river bank.

* Another reason for saying Tashlich next to a river is because Rosh Hashanah is the day when we coronate G‑d as King of the Universe. Jewish kings are anointed next to rivers, and so it is appropriate that we crown G‑d as our King next to a river, as well.

* Going to a river bank or sea shore is also awe inspiring as we contemplate G‑d's mercy in preventing the waters from flooding the dry land. The realization of G‑d's omnipotence inspires us to repent.

Though we do Tashlich beside an earthly river or sea, this watery entity actually represents its Heavenly counterpart. Jewish mysticism teaches that water corresponds to the attribute of kindness. On Rosh Hashanah, we beseech G‑d to treat us with kindness during the new year.

* Water with fish is optimal since fish are not subject to the "evil eye" and are also known to have many offspring. Fish do not have eyelids, so their eyes are always open. This is likened to G‑d's constant supervision over us, and we pray that He mercifully care for us. Also, just as fish may be caught in a fisherman's net, so, too, we are caught in the net of judgment. This awareness helps awaken us to repent.

While there are different versions and verses of the Tashlich liturgy depending upon community, what are common to all are the verses from the book of Micah (7:18-19) "Who is a G‑d like You..." These words correspond to G‑d's thirteen attributes of mercy which we seek to arouse on Rosh Hashanah as we are being judged; the allusion to these thirteen attributes is known to always be beneficial.

The goal of Tashlich is to cast both our sins and the Heavenly prosecutor (a.k.a. the Satan) into the Heavenly sea. And when we shake our clothes after the Tashlich prayer, this is a tangible act to achieve the spiritual goal of shaking sins from our soul.

Needless to say, the physical motions near the water and fish of Tashlich are not what grant us atonement. But if we pay attention to the symbolism and apply the sincere desire to heal our relationship with G‑d as portrayed in the physical demonstrations of Tashlich, then it serves as a crucial part in the process of repenting and returning to G‑d in purity.

May we all shake ourselves from sin and be signed and sealed in the Book of Life for a good and sweet new year!

At the end of days, the evil inclination will have no purpose because the entire world will know Hashem. Thus the entire 'Accuser' angel will have no purpose and he will be destroyed.

I'm all for getting rid of the evil inclination. It totally sucks. Why kill the angel of death though? "In the End of Days, Hashem will "slay the Angel of Death" (Yeshayah 25:8)" He doesn't have free will. That doesn't seem too fair...

In the short time I have before rosh hashana, I saw in Rabbi Moshe Tzuriel's Hebrew commentary on agadot found at Hebrew books several explanations to
the confounding of the Satan, by our additional shofar blowings (Talmud, Rosh hashana 16b)
Abarbanel holds here the Satan means the internal evil inclination (commentary to Vaykira ch. 23)
Rama's opinion in Torat HaOlah 3: Ch.57 Satan here is a nickname for evil philosophies that hold the world has no purpose or existed forever.
Rashi holds that when Satan the accuser sees our additional blowings it is an indication how we much we love the commandments and this quiets his accusation
Rabbi Pinchas Halevi Horovitz adds that the accuser Satan is afraid we will reach the level of love where our love turns sins into merits, so he stops his accusations to make it less easy to reach that higher level.

Vegetarian Kaparot

Rashi, Shabbat 81b, s.v. Hai Parpisa quotes from a responsum of the Geonim a minhag to plant legumes in a pot 22-25 days prior to Rosh HaShanah. On Erev Rosh HaShanah each member of the household takes their pot and waves it over their head seven times stating that "this should be an exchange for this" (implying that the iniquities are transferred to the sprout). The pot is then thrown into the river.

This minhag is significant for numerous reasons. First, by using a plant instead of a chicken, one can avoid the practical problems associated with kaparot. Second, this minhag is performed on Erev Rosh HaShanah as opposed to Erev Yom Kippur (or Aseret Yemei Teshuva). Third, this minhag seems to be the precursor to both kaparot and tashlich.
