Punching Advice
« on: October 07, 2006, 02:13:13 PM »
Punch with a firm wrist and a loose fist.  NOT the other way around (as so many people do).

Tight fists lead to broken bones (and not for the other person).

Practice on something soft like a mattress until this technique becomes automatic.  Your punching power will be increased tenfold!

A loose fist gives the hand considerable shock-absorbing ability, and a firm wrist is clearly necessary as well.  A great puncher will NEVER bend his wrist upon striking a target the way most women and boys do.

When the wrist is firm, the fist AUTOMATICALLY takes on a degree of firmness.  Moreover, keeping the fist loose and plyable will allow for maximum punching power--A firm fist is a broken fist.

Once a person learns how to make a proper fist, he or she can then strike using all of his or her body weight.

As usual, you're 180 degrees off on this Wolfowitz.

A tight fist with a loose wrist is what leads to broken bones.

I guarantee that I punch MUCH harder than you do Wolfowitz.

Anyhow, I don't think that anyone who gets sick looking at JTF.ORG is worth taking punching advice from.

1) I'm not a Jew.  2) Your name is Wolfowitz.  3)  Real Jews CAN fight.

Or was King David just like Woody Allen and Larry King?

Putting someone on an ignore list is the ultimate form of defamation, i.e. the ultimate admission that you do not know how to debate.

BTW tight fists don't hurt as much as loose ones.

Though knowing how to fight is important, it is also important to know that it must be a last resort.

Of course.

Rabbi Kahane said, "A good Jewish fist has to be connected to a good Jewish head."  (This statement of course applies to all people.)

Rabbi Kahane also said, "You can not reason with unreasonable people."

From experience I can say that it is sometimes possible to reason with unreasonable people, but it is very difficult, and very painful.

Once a person learns how to make a proper fist, he or she can then strike using all of his or her body weight.

what do you suggest regarding what part of the fist to strike with?

many say the 2 knuckles, the big one in the middle and the index finger one.

I once saw somebody almost make a terrible mistake.. very painful to watch. I stopped him!!!   He went up to a punching machine and put his thumb -in- his fist and pulled his arm back!!

No, no.

Strike with the ring and pinky-finger knuckles.

I've heard of many punching with those knuckles.. or maybe 3 knuckles. Those 2 and the big one.

But I also just read this comment online..  As an argument to use the first 2. (i.e. not ring and pinky)

"
The alignment of the bones of the knuckles and the hand and wrist are
straighter when you strike with the first two knuckles.  The knuckle is a joint
formed by the metacarpals and proximal phalanges. This joint called the
metacarpal-phalangeal joint (MCP joint) is larger and stronger in the first two
knuckles.  These are the best anatomic reasons to strike with these two joints.
You should know that there is a specific fracture called a Boxer's fracture
which results when you strike with your last knuckle, either by rolling your
punch from the stronger first two knuckles to the last ones or by direct blow
to the last or 5th MCP joint.  These fractures most often occur in fist
fights or when one punches the wall in frustration with your bare hands and
poor technique. When you wear boxing gloves, the distribution of impact to the
other MCP joints and phalanges reduces the chance of fracture.  I would not
medically recommend, however, that you strike or roll your punch onto the
weaker joints."

It makes no difference to me.
