Nadler Faces Accomplished Republican Challenger With Iran As Major Issue

Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish political leaders and its community will be put to the test at the ballot box on their vow to actively support a candidate to run against 24-year incumbent Congressman Jerrold Nadler because of his support for the Iran nuclear arms deal last year.

That after Upper West Side physicist, attorney and successful entrepreneur Phillip J. Rosenthal has nabbed both the Republican and Conservative Party lines and will challenge Nadler on exactly that platform as well as others this November.



Nadler’s 10th Congressional District includes Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Morningside Heights, Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Soho, Wall Street, and Battery Park City, as well as the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Borough Park, Kensington and parts of Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Red Hook, Sunset Park and Midwood.

“The Iran deal is front and center why I decided to run,” said Rosenthal, who graduated salutatorian from Bronx High School of Science, went to Yale where he graduated summa cum laude, phi beta kappa in physics and then Caltech where he earned a Ph.D. in physics researching string theory and cosmology before earning a J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School.

“I’m apalled that he (Nadler) said he would support the Iran deal and his constituents opposed it. It puts our nation and Israel at great risk and when he said he would support the deal, I realized the danger of the deal and it motivated me to run. It’s my understanding there are well over 200,000 Jews in the district and it is incomprehensible that he would support the deal,” he added.

Rosenthal was one of the guest speakers at the Brooklyn South Conservative Club’s annual President’s Day Dinner last night, and while his speech on Israel and why he’s running remains an important issue, his resume deserves further noting.

Upon graduating from Harvard, Rosenthal practiced law at Covington & Burling in Washington, DC, specializing in patent, nuclear, and telecommunications law. 

In 1999, he co-founded Fastcase, a company that brings big data analytics to legal research and is dedicated to democratizing the law.  Fastcase partners with scores of state and local bar associations, as well as many of the largest law firms and most prominent law schools in the world. 

While at Caltech, Phil was a consultant at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he worked on the Pluto Fast Flyby program, which evolved into the mission that visited Pluto just last year. While living in Washington DC, he served on the board of the MIT Enterprise Forum of Washington DC and Baltimore, which has the mission is to inform, connect, and coach technology entrepreneurs — enabling them to rapidly transform ideas into world-changing companies. 

He also served on the board of The Dwelling Place, a non-profit that supports homeless families in their pursuit of self-sufficiency by providing housing, education, financial and life skills, and career enhancement. 

Currently, Rosenthal sits on the board of the Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET), a 501(c)(3) think tank and policy center with an unabashedly pro-America and pro-Israel stance.  He also is a member of the Leadership Council of the Republican Jewish Coalition.

Rosenthal’s challenge to Nadler comes as the national mood has taken a turn against incumbents and lifetime politicians as evidenced by the rise of both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders in the presidential primaries.



The challenge also comes as both Boro Park Assemblyman Dov Hikind and Boro Park/Midwood City Councilman David Greenfield participated in several protests against Nadler’s support of the Iran deal and vow to remember this come election time.

Both Hikind and Greenfield did not respond to Rosenthal’s candidacy at post time. But already some in Brooklyn’s large Orthodox Jewish community said they plan to take a serious look at Rosenthal.

“Jerry Nadler, once viewed by one and all, as a strong pro Israel Congressman, continues to underestimate the feelings of anger and betrayal ‎felt by members of the Orthodox Jewish community. Despite his weak efforts to explain away his Iran vote, Nadler is now viewed negatively as a sell-out to the Obama administration at the expense of his own constituents,” said an influential and knowledgeable source inside the orthodox community.




“A conservative challanger will, at the very least, force him to work that much harder to fix the irreparable political damage he has caused himself in the community and the broader district,” the source added.

 A second influential and knowledgable source inside the Orthodox Jewish community said they look forward to meeting with Rosenthal and did not rule out the possibility that the Orthodox community would actively campaign for him.

Congressman Jerry Nadler scored a resounding victory in a primary election that was said to be a referendum on his support of the Iran nuclear deal.

According to unofficial results, Nadler beat Oliver Rosenberg, his first Democratic primary challenger in two decades, by a margin of 89 percent to 10 percent in New York 10th congressional district’s Democratic primary on Tuesday.

“After 40 years in politics, there’s no better feeling than after an election – this campaign in particular, which I am glad to be done with — and so are the voters in the district, who sent a resounding message tonight,” a smiling Nadler told a few dozen of his supporters gathered in Greenwich Village, on the west side of Lower Manhattan. “Tonight, the voters of the 10th congressional district made their voice heard loud and clear. I said earlier during this campaign that in an age in which principles and politics have never seen further apart, it is important that at certain times and on certain issues to act according to your conscience and to do what is right based on the merits, not the politics. I am glad that tonight the politics worked out.”

Nadler, who represents a large Liberal and Orthodox Jewish constituency in the largest Jewish district in the nation, has faced criticism for his support of the Iran nuclear deal. The NY Daily News endorsed his challenger on the basis of Nadler’s vote on the international accord.

Granted a vote of confidence, Nadler maintained that the outcome shows that in most of the district people thought it was the right thing to do, or that he voted his conscience while agreeing with him in general. “I think that most of the district approves of the deal,” Nadler told Jewish Insider. “Probably, a lot of people agreed with that vote, or they do now.”

According to Nadler, even those who disagreed with him on the deal felt that he represented them well in general and now want him to continue to represent them in making sure the deal is enforced and hold Iran’s feet to the fire. “But I do think that most of the district thinks that it was the right thing to do.”

Ryan Karben, a former State Assemblyman and a political activist now residing in the district, said the results show that Nadler managed to be larger than the diversity of the communities that he represents. “I think tonight was a vote of confidence for that kind of leadership,” Karben told Jewish Insider. He added that the results don’t prove much on Nadler’s vote in support of the Iran deal since he had the credibility “fighting the pro-Israel battle.”

Nadler’s overall lead was much smaller in the Brooklyn part of his district. Nadler eked out a win by one single vote with 100 percent of precincts reporting. However, in the 48th Assembly District, which is largely comprised of the Borough Park Orthodox Jewish community, Rosenberg beat Nadler 78 percent to 22 percent.

“Brooklyn voters didn’t forget Nadler’s support of the Iran deal despite an unqualified challenger,” Councilman David Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) told Jewish Insider. “It’s up to Nadler to repair the trust that he’s lost from his Brooklyn constituents.”

Ezra Friedlander, a Democratic consultant and a Nadler supporter, slammed local self-proclaimed leaders “who not only lied about Nadler’s lifelong commitment to the Jewish community but also his record of achievement pertaining to support for Israel, most notably when he defended Israel’s right to defend itself during the Gaza conflict.” He also pointed to Nadler’s authorship of the RLUIPA act, “which all religious communities rely on to build shuls when local zoning boards attempt to keep frum people out.”

Nadler was gracious in his defeat in that part of the district. “They are entitled to protest,” he said. “The key is that I am going to continue to be the Congressman and I want to work with everybody, and I certainly want to work with the people in Borough Park, as I have on many other subjects. I will continue to do that.”

Curtis Ellis, a spokesman for the Rosenberg campaign, told The Associated Press that the candidate was proud that he put Nadler to the test in the primary. “Congressman Nadler learned he couldn’t take the voters for granted. He had to ask for the vote and that should make him a better congressman,” Ellis said. “Contested elections are a good habit to get into. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another 20 years.”

How many of the Jews in Borough Park are actually Democrat? I don't know how religious Jews would vote for a homosexual Jew who claims to be Orthodox. Probably most of them are Republican.

I'm not sure of the enrollment numbers.   But there are a large number of  Jews in Borough Park that a registered Democrats that vote Republican in many races.   

For what it's worth,  Dov Hikind is a registered Democrat but he's considered a DINO  (  Democrat in Name Only. ) by many.

He didn't seek yet another term in Congress in 2012.   He's still around though.   I saw him in Great Neck at a Candidates Forum in May.   Not surprisingly,  the Dumocrats in the audience gave him an ovation.
