What is "conservative" Judaism
« on: March 25, 2018, 03:22:53 AM »
Recently my wife asked me what is "conservative" Judaism as she was working for some people originally from America who told her that is what they are.
She like most Israelis have absolutely no idea what "conservative" Judaism is they only know Dati,Chareidi,Masorati, Reformim & Chiloni (Orthodox,Ultra Orthodox,Traditional ,Reform & Secular.
I told her that conservative is something in between orthodox & reform & is basically reform with some ritualistic window dressing.
Any thoughts?

In Israel Masorati means Traditional but the Conservative Movement calls itself that in Israel so it's even more confusing.

Chaim has to explain to Non-Jews on his videos that when talking about the Conservative Movement, it's not Conservative meaning Right Wing like the word means in English. Originally it was in response to the Reforms and really was Conservative. JTS (their seminary) was originally Modern Orthodox and Conservative was Modern Orthodox in the US. But the split happened when Solomon Shechter took over the movement. Shechter turned it into Frankel's European 19th Century Positive-Historical School which was originally created directly in response to the Reforms who were changing things too fast.

The following is according to Wikipedia.

While regarding itself as the heir of Rabbi Zecharias Frankel's 19th century Positive-Historical School in Europe, Conservative Judaism fully institutionalized as a denomination only in the United States during the mid-20th century. Its largest center today is in North America, where its main congregational arm is the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the New York-based Jewish Theological Seminary of America operates as rabbinic seminary. Worldwide, affiliated communities are united within the umbrella organization Masorti Olami. Conservative Judaism is estimated to represent close to 1.1 million people, both more than 600,000 registered adult congregants and many non-member identifiers.

Zelhar defined it perfectly
If someone says something bad about you, say something nice about them. That way, both of you would be lying.

In your heart you know WE are right and in your guts you know THEY are nuts!

I figured it out talking to a wacko. Take Satmar's position on how important Israel is and cross it with a Catholic's opinion on how important a Jew is and you have the ideology.

Pfft what's the worst that can happen. I came in knowing nothing and they said words against me and I made comebacks and I learned things and hopefully taught one or two as well. What are they gonna do throw words at you?
