The reason that the southern states succeded from the union was that they didn't want the federal government telling them what to do or how to live their lives.  Also, most southerners didn't even own slaves.  Only the really wealthy who had enough money to own plantations were the ones who could afford slaves.  Most who served in the Confederal army were dirt poor who wanted to defend their lands from an invaiding federal army.
