an attempt (an success) by the eruv rav regime to stay in power. Religious Jews wont vote for them, neither would arabs, Russian goyim are their best ticket for power.
 + secular zionism's close connection with russians since many of the founders were from russia, and for them real Jewishness didnt matter, but was defined not positivly but negativly by anti-semitism. So since many of the wetbacks would also be killed (for having one great grand father as a Jew, they can relate.
  - we have to be the opposite, we are proud Jews not because we have some land, but because G-d choose us to be his special beloved nation, the elect, and gave us his Torah which defines who we are as Jews.
