When someone is "speaking in Jewish" that refers to speaking Yiddish, not Hebrew.

'Yiddish' is just the (yiddish) word for 'Jewish', so you're right.

Yiddish and Modern Hebrew are just as "Jewish" as each other.  I can't speak it very well, my Bubbe speaks it fluently.

Aside from that, why would Jews continue to speak a language that is a result of oppression by the Germans? I say forget the Yiddish and learn Hebrew..

Well, I also thinks that the Yiddish accent speaking Hebrew sounds horrible.  Sad to say I'm not fluent in either language but only speak a basic Hebrew.  I don't speak any Yiddish but my father and mother are fluent in Yiddish though.

I'm not familiar with the term but I know that tink means plaster in Yiddish so maybe it is a slang term for dolls.

What do you think?

How did he use it?

What type of people did he call tinkerlach?

I searched on www.pass.to/glossary and couldn't find Tinkerlach.

Mord, maybe you can ask people who knew your grandfather or people who heard him say it. I can ask around and see what I get.

About that word tinkerlach.

The only thing i can come up with is, that tinker could mean tunker, like in Dutch donker.
which means dark.

lach in fact means smile.

Yiddish was a secret German dialect among Jews..  they had no other reason to use a secret language other than oppression. As far as it being a beautiful langauge, to each is own I guess. I personally think it's annoying, but I like Hebrew a lot..

According to Wikipedia

"The oldest surviving literary document in Yiddish is a blessing in a Hebrew prayer book from 1272"

So Yiddish is fairly old from about maybe the 1200's? ???

There are also some Slavic and Polish words in Yiddish I think ;)

Oh sure, I took courses in German and I can understand as much Yiddish as I do German, but the words that German speakers didn't understand were things like "schmuck, schlamil, putz".. etc

Yiddish originated around the year 1000 CE so it is 1000 years old.  That is why Yiddish is so important, since it was spoken for about 1000 years by nearly all the Jews of Europe which makes it the second oldest Jewish language spoken as it is tied for Aramaic in the duration of the language spoken.
