Title: Anyone here like professional wrestling?
Post by: White Israelite on January 24, 2008, 08:36:23 PM
Yeah I know it's scripted and what not, i've been watching WWF since 1995 although I stopped watching for a while in 2007 after the whole Benoit murder thing. Saw RAW in High Definition last nite on my 42" Fujitsu plasma, wow!

I also watch TNA (Total Nonstop Action) and ROH (Ring Of Honor). I watch a few promotions over in Japan as well.

Please tell me i'm not the only fan  ;D

No, you're certainly not the only one! I'm a big fan of Wrestling and have been to several wrestling matches at MSG and Nassau Colliseum. I even went to a few ECW events. Those are absolutely nuts, but so much fun! I was at Wrestlemania 10. I was at MSG when Stone Cold Steve Austin stunned McMahon for the first time :)

My students sometimes get amazed when they see how much I know about wrestling and how well I can understand the conversations they have about it.

It's nice to see I'm not the only one on this forum that's into this :)

I liked it as a kid, but I gave it up at about 12 or 13.  It was a thrill to see the Iron Sheik on Howard Stern a while back though.

Awsome, I went to a few shows with my dad in the past. We went to a WCW Nitro in 1996 in Chicago, it was Arn Anderson vs Ric Flair in a cage match and Brian Pillman interfered, and it was crazy to see Hulk Hogan live. I was 11 years old at the time.

I also went to several WWF house shows in 1997 and WWF Backlash pay per view in 2001 in Chicago.

Being there live is a crazy experience.

I never went to a ECW show but I watched it when they were promoting barely legal pay per view. Paul Heyman the founder of ECW was also Jewish, that guy is a wrestling master mind. It's a shame what WWE has done to ECW today.

If you like pure wrestling with a lot of talent, seriously check out ROH, these guys are really talented.

Heres some videos. I also have videos of Japanese wrestling on my youtube though the matches are really violent (death matches)

Heres some ROH stuff.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=LgppTkpxCwA

These guys have a lot of talent.

I also watched CZW a bit but it's rediculously violent and just a bunch of spot monkeys that probably aired in snuff fimls.

Depends what your watching, WWE some of the girls are wearing outfits that are a bit revealing.

Not all wrestling is like that.

I'm not into it, but as long as you know it's theater, hey enjoy it as such.

I'd really suggest watching Ultimate Fighting, it's real, and you can learn something (like real fighting moves) from watching.  O0

The wrestling now is not as good as it was back in the 1980's.  The bits were better, the ones who were champs, were champs longer, and the rivaries were also longer.  There are too many times that they have the same matches every week on TV.  It's getting tired.  Last week, there was a show showing how all the wrestling moves are actually done.  Did anyone see that show?

Yes but that is WWE, there are many wrestling promotions which do not have the horrible storylines or bad wrestling WWE has now. I still watch WWE occasionally just for kicks but it's nothing like it used to be.

Wrestling was good years ago however its become a big money freak show and for the most part the matches are all fixed. Its just not the same.

When I was a little kid I liked Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant.

I like the Undertaker a lot.

I haven't watched wrestling in a long time though because it's really raunchy.
Yes Andre and the Hulk were great!

I was probably one of the few girls who actually had a Hulk Hogan action figure, complete with a little plastic championship belt.

Those action figures are rare now and go for quite a bit of money nowadays. I had a large collection, when we moved a number of years ago, my mother put them somewhere, now she doesn't remember.

I've seen that list before, theres a number of other wrestlers not listed who are also Jewish, Colt Cabana from ROH (who is coming to WWE) is also Jewish and very talented. The founder of ROH was Feinstein who was Jewish although....he is not a good person, you can PM me for more details.

DDP is one of the last people i'd figure to be Jewish, Macho Man definitely Jewish, A-Train was one of the last people i'd figure to be Jewish as well, Kane as well, billy kidman knew he was Jewish, Paul Heyman definitely Jewish, Bill Goldberg definitely Jewish), Raven didn't know he was Jewish but interesting, Kevin Nash was surprising to me, Brian Pillman I knew was Jewish and one of my favorite wrestlers (RIP).

You can find a full list of Jewish wrestlers at obsessed with wrestling.

Khali is very boring, slow, and cannot wrestle.

I think WWE only hired him because he was very big and  killed a man in real life accidental

On May 28, 2001, Brian Ong died after receiving a flapjack from Singh. Ong had suffered a previous concussion during the session, but the trainers gave him a lower evaluation for not avoiding injuries and told him to continue training. In addition, it was proven that Ong did not receive any protective gear or supervision by APW staff. This second concussion ultimately proved fatal for him. As Singh inadvertently caused his death, Ong's family brought a lawsuit against All Pro Wrestling. They were found liable for recklessness after less than a day of deliberations, awarding the Ong family for damages of over $1.3 million.

When I was a kid, I thought Macho Man was a schwartze but later learned he was a white Jew.  I guess he just had a tan.  When the Iron Sheik was on Howard Stern, he called Macho Man a cheap Jew!

The 'Animal' was HUGE down under.

I saw the WWF at Sydney in '86/'87.

The stadium was near Chinatown. When it was over there were 5,000 white Aussies walking through Chinatown making 'George the Animal' noises!

It was funny as! :::D

He'd come out with a snake ;D

I used to like watching him when I was really little :D ;D ;)

I think in an old video I had, "1992 the/a year in review", jake had his snake bite the macho man. Completely planned. Macho man was "tied to the ropes". The snake took a real bite. It was crazy.  I`m sure it was a cobra..prob with poison removed!

wikipedia
"
Roberts forced a cobra to bite Savage's arm as the Macho Man was tied up in the ropes (seen on WWF Superstars).
"
another site says, WWF superstars Nov 1991.

I stopped watching after 1993. But picked up W12 after seeing Piper on the video case. Favourite wrestler was Roddy Piper, he came back and did an awesome backyard brawl against Goldust in Wrestlemania 12.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjv0FbjY72I

Classic part of michaels vs piper.
1:45-2:30, of this.  One my my favourite classic piper moves
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9Cs7OIHDfI

Really though, wrestling is harmful in that it gets you to think of fights as "friendly".. As in, don`t do anything to your opponent that you wouldn`t want done to yourself. No real punches. Some early UFC matches are probably better viewing, or some Don Frye .  should be downloadable on youtube or if not youtube, then emule.. But emule has alot of porn so be careful..Prob good to just take up boxing, you don`t want a broken nose though.

Mr Fuji - manager of yokozuna, on one of my 1993 videos. He managed teams before..  On an old vid he did a diving headbut to the undertaker's groin. No response!  Very cleverly done..

On another I saw the undertaker piledrived/piledriven on the cement flaw, head first, by the Bezerker (looked like it anyway).  No response(undertaker was fine.. no pain shown!)

one of my favourite wrestlers was the least skilled. Zeus.
He was totally invincible, you could only beat him by knocking him out, like whacking him over the head with a bell.

Another favourite was Akeem, very underrated, he was absolutely hilarious.

Because you did not say Tom, I will add    -  Tom "Tiny Lister" Jr

Huge black geezer, but he is noticable, because he seems to be very obviously blind in one eye..
http://blogs.argusleadermedia.com/uploads/2007/06/zeus.bmp

I've seen him in a number of films, playing small parts.. I even saw him in an advert for Lynx deodrant.

Suprisingly, he was the president of the united states of america, in "the 5th element" . I have never seen such bad acting from a lead actor.  I have not seen him since! But he is still going films.

I used to own "no holds barred" on VHS video.

Classic front cover.. was a bit like this, except Zeus was on the left, and Hogan on the right.  Zeus looked tougher than hogan.
http://www.nanarland.com/Chroniques/cadencedecombat/jaquette.jpg

they used to call Zeus "The Human Wrecking Machine"..

In those early days of WWF, 1991  and before, and maybe 1992, characters were more believable.. The Undertaker really did feel no pain. Hulkamania was running wild. Zeus was just a monster. The Warrior was electric..
Nobody seemed to have much wrestling skill though!

Hogan was on the front of almost every wrestlemania video.. for perhaps 10 consecutive years/ wrestlemanias.. I had a catalogue from silvervision. (I stopped following it after wrestlemania 8 / 1993)

Goldberg (of WCW fame) , came much much later, and kicks all their a$$es though!
In power, and skill, and electricity.

Alot of  later WWF or, what is is now called. WWE, is mostly about bad attitude and showing off.

and the music is just pop music.

Steve Austin might have started it.. You know in real life he beat his wife up.. she said he could not tell his character in the ring from his real self.

In the good old days, you had good guys and bad guys..
the sad thing was the bad guys were not so much bad, they were merely people that messed matches up by causing a disqualification, or slowing the match down. But the concept of good guy vs bad guy.. Good guy vs good guy, was good.
Since perhaps steve austin, fans started to like degenerate loud mouth characters.   In the old days the only show off pain in the backside was shawn michaels. It seems that later, alot of the top characters were largely show offs -The Rock, perhaps Jericho, Steve Austin, and alot of the top characters..

As far as commentarors are concerned..  Bobby Heenan was far better than his replacement, jerry lawler

the old way was better, get in there, beat the other guy, and then celebrate !
Warrior Debut

or,  Undertaker, he just stands there and it makes an impression!
I used to fast forward him coming into the ring.. but it is worth watching for his debut

It was fun in the old days. before all that.

The fun was in, for example, a match between Hogan and the Warrior. Wrestlemania 6 / 1991.
Like 2 powerful forces going against each other, nobody knew what would happen. What would happen if they collide, the 2 powers!. Hogan and Warrior. Or, warrior/hogan and earthquake- the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object

Hogan and Warrior played it out like that brilliantly during the match. Running criss cross across the ring simultaneously and colliding.. one dominated, the other dominated, both dominated at the same time.. It was great when Hogan hulked up, and Warrior "warriored" at a similar time...

Goldberg did not show off much, it was more just his incredible intensity and power.. he was unstoppable, and could slam anybody and anything..

It is a showing off that happens naturally from the brilliance of the character.

It was never about bad attitude. The characters were decent people.

SO true, then they got really dirty for  awhile. I hated watching the women fight, I found that boring.

if you like that i suggest checking out MMA (UFC/EliteXC/Pride/etc.)

K-1 kickboxing is also good.

Brock Lesnar from WWE is actually making his MMA debut in the UFC this Saturday, would be a good intro for you if ur into wrestling.  It's a very good card all around.

I thought he already debuted. Played a (relatively) "rubbish" opponent though
He was going to play Hong Man.

MMA is good when they aren't lying on top of each other like queers.

Brock Lesner matches will be very good. I look forward to it. Hope it will be on youtube. Alot of videos get pulled from there because of copyright. So people make terrible spliced videos with clips and music in the middle

The women wrestling in WWE is very dull but there are some skilled female wrestlers, Molly Holly, Trish Stratus, and Beth Phoenix come to mind.

Also Japan has some very skilled woman wrestlers.

My favorite event ever was Wrestlemania III in 1987.  Hogan vs. Andre.  Steamboat vs. Savage.  That was the best Wrestlemania ever

No worries, i got you!

http://mmafightvideos.blogspot.com/ < only site you'll ever need for MMA

they post the videos basically the same night of all major UFC/MMA events and shows.  next day at the latest.  they have a whole archive of old fights as well.  lesner ended up fighting someone otehr then choi, and he won his first match pretty quick.  the guy he's fighting in his UFC debut (Frank Mir) is a submission specialist/former champion so he may give him trouble, but i personally think Lesner will take him due to his strength, size and wrestling ability.  asside from the WWE he was a olympic level wrestler in college.  but it could go either way, for an example of what im talkin about check the Frank Mir fight they just posted against Antoni Hardonk (world class kickboxer).  He finished him in about a minute.

i feel you about the ground game, it gets  boring SOMETIMES although sometimes it's really interesting too.  But the worst for me is when their just pushing eachother up against the cage Tim Sylvia style.  one thing i do know for sure, u need it nowadays in MMA.  with no ground game, ur gonna end up getting ur arm broken or have a guy takin u down at will.

Used to watch Bruno Samartino, Andre the Giant and George "the animal" Steele; showing my age. Now with MMA you can watch the real thing so I lost interest in pro wrestling. My son and I both train in BJJ.

Bruno Samartino -  That is impressive..

I read a great point somewhere, somebody said that with MMA out there, WWF is like a burlesque show.

I actually saw Bruno Sammartino a number of times at Madison Square Garden during his second title run in the mid 70's. Back then you got a wrestling match not the side shows that came later in the 80's and 90's. Bruno was a big deal back then. The spectators use to chant his name the second they saw him appear in the ring. Bruno, Bruno. They were great matches back then.

I live close to Bruno Sammartino.  It is neat to be able to go to a local restaurant or shopping center and see him walking around.  Many people still ask for his autograph or get their picture taken with him.
