Title: Great and memorable quotes:
Post by: newman on August 11, 2007, 04:07:58 AM
We often stumble across great, profound quotes in life only to forget the source later on. Here is a small collection to get started. Please add others that you may come across.
*********************************************************

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a well, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, co-operate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialisation is for insects. -- Robert Heinlein

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." ----George Orwell

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel or envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - -- Winston Churchill

"Inside every man is a George Costanza"----Newman

Very interesting topic newman. I like the George Orwell quote. He has some great ones to his credit.

"Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind."  --  George Orwell

The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.  -- Plato

The time is coming when people will be insane and when they see someone who is not insane they will attack them saying: You are insane because you are not like us.  -- Abba Anthony

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

All from Aristotle:

‘But even if one were to fix a moderate amount for all, that would still be no use: for it is more necessary to equalize appetites than possessions'

‘men’s ambition and their desire to make money are among the most frequent causes of deliberate acts of injustice’

‘men and women have different parts to play in managing the household: his to win, hers to preserve.’

‘The virtue of a person being ruled is not practical wisdom but correct opinion.’

‘he who asks law to rule is asking God and intelligence and no others to rule; while he who asks for the rule of a human being is importing a wild beast too; for desire is like a wild beast, and anger perverts rules and the very best of men.'

‘it is a democracy whenever the free are sovereign, oligarchy when the rich are sovereign.’

‘a state cannot be made out of any and every collection of people’

‘It is always the weaker who go in search of justice and equality; the strong reck nothing of them.’

‘the question whether a job is honourable or not is to be decided less with reference to the actions themselves than in the light of their end and purpose.’

‘The same thing is true of men’s relations both with each other and the things they encounter: we always delight more in what comes first.  Therefore we must keep all that is of inferior quality unfamiliar to the young, particularly things with an ingredient of wickedness and hostility.’

‘to be constantly asking “what is the use of it?” is unbecoming to those of broad vision and unworthy of free men.’

Some of the most famous folk sayings around were made up by Benjamin Franklin like:  Lie down with dogs and you will get up with fleas.

Republicans are the party that says that goverment doesn't work. Then they get elected and prove it.

"The tendency in Africa for nations to become independent, and at the same time to do justice to all, does not only mean being just to the black man of Africa, but also to be just to the white man of Africa. We call ourselves Europeans, but actually we represent the white men of Africa. They are the people not only in the Union but through major portions of Africa who brought civilization here, who made the present developments of black nationalism possible. By bringing them education, by showing them this way of life, by bringing in industrial development, by bringing in the ideals which western civilization has developed itself. And the white man came to Africa, perhaps to trade, in some cases, perhaps to bring the gospel; has remained to stay. And particularly we in this southern most portion in Africa, have such a stake here that this is our only motherland, we have no where else to go. We settled a country bare, and the Bantu came in this country and settled certain portions for themselves, and it is in line with the thinking of Africa, to grant those fullest rights which we also with you admit all people should have and believe providing those rights for those people in the fullest degree in that part of southern Africa which their forefathers found for themselves and settled in. But similarly, we believe in balance, we believe in allowing exactly those same full opportunities to remain within the grasp of the white man who has made all this possible."

- South African Prime Minister Dr. Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd

I personally love war quotes, because they can be applied to normal day life since every day is a struggle with those muzlems around.

Since fear and love can hardly co-exist, It is safer to be feared than loved.

The sinews of war are not gold, but great soldiers.

It is easy to be brave behind a castle wall

In a fight anger is as good as courage

- Welsh Proverbs

Only the dead have seen the end of war

- Plato

Come back with your shield in hand or on top of it

- A spartan mother to her son

I do not know what the third word war will be fought with, but the fourth will be fought with sticks and stones.

- Albert Einstein

A man can die but once

A victory is twice itself if the victor brings home full numbers

- William Shakespear

Quote
"Moreover, in the darkest times of the Middle Ages, when the Asiatic cloud masses had gathered heavily over Europe, it was Jewish free-thinkers, scholars, and physicians who clung to the banner of enlightenment and spiritual independence in the face of the harshest personal pressures and defended Europe against Asia. We owe it to their exertions, not least of all, that a more natural, more rational, and certainly unmythical explanation of the world was eventually able to triumph again, and that the bond of culture which now links us with the enlightenment of Greco-Roman antiquity remained unbroken. If Christianity has done everything to orientalize the Occident, Judaism has helped significantly to occidentalize it again and again: in a certain sense this means as much as making Europe's task and history a continuation of the Greek."
