I've never heard Ladino music, but it sounds interesting. I don't have much to base my opinion of Sephardic/Mizrachi music except from what I hear in Israel, and based on what I've heard in Israel I don't really like it, and yes, it sounds too Muslimy to me. I don't like the arabic scale, and regardless if one thinks there's a difference between it and arab music, the scales, instruments, and singing style was all invented by arabs. That's not to say that there isn't fantastic and beautiful Sephardic/Mizrachi music, I'm sure there's plenty of it, I just haven't heard any because I haven't attempted to ever find the good stuff. I'm not a big fan of that singing style, I'm sure it could be done beautifully, but most of what I've heard is brash and overdone.

this is a great Mizrahi song in Russian, the singer is Bukharian and he singing about a Kavkazi city called Baku Yes, this song is alright. I think the singing style can be nice and full of expression if done correctly. This guy has a nice voice. I like the accordion too, but this one is a synthesized one. A problem that plagues this sort of music is the instrumentation. Most of the time it's done with synthesizers, and I'm not a big fan of that sort of sound, it's like listening to computer music for me. I would enjoy the music much more if it was all done with actual instruments, do you know of any that features real instruments? |

I agree with Ze'ev, I also can't stand the arabic scale. But some Mizrahi music is great. I haven't heard too much Ladino music so I can't say yes or no. But yes to Mizrahi. I'm sure I would be really interested in hearing Ladino music. Any suggestions, let me know  |

Is it wrong to even like Muzzie music? I like a couple of songs from hamas YSV. But I wish their destruction. Anyway I did read (on a commentary on Likutei Moharan- about this Breslever listining and learning Iraqi music to bring them down, during the first Iraq war, when they were sending missles on Israel, but I dont want to get Kabbalistic on you- but Rabbi Nachman discusses different music, and also when it is bad to listin to it, and when sometimes it cold be good listining to music from a foreign source, something about seperating the little good they have and bringing their destruction.

I like Sefardik cantoral melodies they use during prayer. But I don't like too much the melodies they sing on the Radio. It sounds like Arab songs and doesn't seem to be compatible with modern western musical rythem and melody. It seems like they force it to try and make it compatible but it isn't really compatible.

I am familiar with the type of Israeli "Yemenite" music I think you are referring to. I don't particularly like it; it comes across, to me, as somewhat artificial and I'm not saying it's bad music. I do, however, enjoy authentic Yemeni music and my friends and I used to sing in Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic during holiday, Shabbath gatherings. I know that some Moroccan Jews would also sing in Arabic.
