Earthquakes Put Japan's Nuclear Reactors on Red Alert!!!!!!
« on: March 11, 2011, 01:49:22 PM »
This could be another disaster in the making! Wonder what our government is doing considering that if Japan has a nuclear melt down it will release an an enormous amount of radiation that could spread across the world.

Quote
The 8.9-magnitude earthquake that shook Japan early March 11 blew out the cooling systems of two nuclear reactors there. An inability to cool the reactors could cause radiation leaks, and both power plants are "bracing for the worst,” according to government officials.

"At present we have no reports of any radioactive materials or otherwise affecting the surrounding areas," Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan told the press. The malfunctions are occuring at the Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Daiichi power plant near Tokyo and the Tohoku Electric Power Co. facility in Onagawa. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said that all the necessary precautions are being taken to prepare for radiation leaks, including evacuating thousands of residents within a 3-mile radius of the Fukushima facility.

Eleven reactors nearest the quake's epicenter automatically shut down upon sensing vibrations in the early hours of March 11. "Reactors shut themselves down automatically when something called 'ground acceleration' is registered at a certain point, which is usually quite small. It will instantly drop control rods into the [nuclear] core," Professor Tim Albram, a nuclear fuel engineer at the University of Manchester in the U.K., explained to the press.

Those control rods block neutrons from entering the core and inducing the fission reactions that produce nuclear energy. When the rods drop into the core, the heat put out by the nuclear fuel rods they surround plummets instantly, reducing the core's temperature to less than 5 percent of normal in a matter of seconds.

A base level of heat from nuclear decay continues to flow off the rods, however, and that's the problem in the Fukushima and Onagawa plants. Officials say they do not have enough electric power to pump water through the cooling systems and dissipate the extra heat. Water levels continue to drop.

Mark Hibbs, a nuclear expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told Reuters that there is serious concern in Japan whether the cooling of the core and removal of residual heat could be assured. "If that does not happen, if heat is not removed, there is a definite danger of a core melt ... fuel will overheat, become damaged and melt down."

"Even if fuel rods melt and the pressure inside the reactor builds up, radiation would not leak as long as the reactor container functions well," Tomoko Murakami, leader of the nuclear energy group at Japan's Institute of Energy Economics, told Reuters. Still, no one wants to take the chance.

The power plants are trying to restore power to its emergency power system in order to be able to pump water inside the reactors, a Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman said.

Huge blast at Japan nuclear power plant

A massive explosion has struck a Japanese nuclear power plant after Friday's devastating earthquake.

A huge pall of smoke was seen coming from the plant at Fukushima and several workers were injured.

Japanese officials fear a meltdown at one of the plant's reactors after radioactive material was detected outside it.

A huge relief operation is under way after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 600.

Hundreds more people are missing and it is feared about 1,300 may have died.

The offshore earthquake triggered a tsunami which wreaked havoc on Japan's north-east coast, sweeping far inland and devastating a number of towns and villages.

Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan declared a state of emergency at the Fukushima 1 and 2 power plants as engineers try to confirm whether a reactor at one of the stations has gone into meltdown.

It is an automatic procedure after nuclear reactors shut down in the event of an earthquake, allowing officials to take rapid action.
Cooling system failure

Television pictures showed a massive blast at one of the buildings of the Fukushima 1 plant, about 250km (160 miles) north-east of Tokyo.

A huge cloud of smoke billows out and large bits of debris are flung far from the building.

Japan's NHK TV showed before and after pictures of the plant. They appeared to show that the outer structure of one of four buildings at the plant had collapsed after the explosion.

The Tokyo Electric Power Co, the plant's operator, said four workers had been injured.

It is not yet clear in exactly what part of the plant the explosion occurred or what caused it.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said experts were trying to determine the level of radiation at the site.

Japan's nuclear agency said on Saturday that radioactive caesium and iodine had been detected near the number one reactor of the Fukushima 1 plant.

The agency said this may indicate that containers of uranium fuel inside the reactor may have begun melting.

Air and steam, with some level of radioactivity, has been released from several of the reactors at both plants in an effort to relieve the huge amount of pressure building up inside.

Mr Kan said the amount of radiation released was "tiny".

Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate the area within a 10-km radius of the plant. BBC correspondent Nick Ravenscroft said police stopped him 60km from the Fukushima 1 plant.

Nuclear reactors at four power plants in the earthquake-struck zone automatically shut down on Friday.

In some of the reactors at the two Fukushima plants the cooling systems, which should keep operating on emergency power supplies, failed.

Without cooling, the temperature in the reactor core builds, with the risk that it could melt through its container into the building housing the system.

Pressure also builds in the containers housing the reactor.

Analysts say a meltdown would not necessarily lead to a major disaster because light-water reactors would not explode even if they overheated.

But Walt Patterson, of the London research institute Chatham House, said "this is starting to look a lot like Chernobyl".

He said it was too early to tell if the explosion's aftermath would result in the same extreme level of radioactive contamination that occurred at Chernobyl.

The explosion was most likely caused by melting fuel coming into contact with water, he told the BBC.

The 8.9-magnitude tremor struck in the afternoon local time on Friday off the coast of Honshu island at a depth of about 24km, 400km (250 miles) north-east of Tokyo.

It was nearly 8,000 times stronger than last month's quake in New Zealand that devastated the city of Christchurch, scientists said.

Some of the same search and rescue teams from around the world that helped in that disaster are now on their way to Japan.

This could not happen at a worse time... The American people were actually starting to embrace the idea of reviving the development of nuclear power plants here in America... This is a black eye for the nuclear industry... Clearly from what has been said it seems this plant is old and has not been without problems... Some years back the local power company here on Long Island built a plant they were unable to operate because residents here were concerned over situations like this... Clearly the back up power systems at the plant in Japan were not maintained or hardened enough to sustain the quake they well knew might one day take place... It seems like safety always takes a back seat to profit and need... The fact that the control rods in the reactor did not drop instantly during the quake shows that the plant was either outdated or defective... Since Japan is not some third world country this shows that man is still not up to the task of controlling a power source like this.

The Reactors hit by the tsunami are 40 year old so called "2nd generation" reactors. It seems that they have an inherent weakness of inability to shut down completely without cooling water supply. The new 3rd and 3.5 generation reactors are supposed to be able to passively cool down in case of emergency or accident.

The earthquake is one thing however whats going on with the power plants is clearly the work of man.... Something has clearly gone wrong in Japan... For a country that boasted of it technical abilities and efficiency things just don't seem to be working out for them... The Toyota Way mind set they embrace so well seems to have left them with multiple power plants that don't work so well and a car company that put millions of dangerous cars on the road.... Let's say a prayer that they are able to get the plants under control before they contaminate half the earth.

Radioactive! Meltdown Confirmed At Fukushima No.1 Plant

TOKYO (Nikkei)–The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) said Saturday afternoon the explosion at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant could only have been caused by a meltdown of the reactor core. The same day, Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501), which runs the plant, began to flood the damaged reactor with seawater to cool it down, resorting to measures that could rust the reactor and force the utility to scrap it.

Cesium and iodine, by-products of nuclear fission, were detected around the plant, which would make the explosion the worst accident in the roughly 50-year history of Japanese nuclear power generation. An explosion was heard near the plant’s No. 1 reactor about 3:30 p.m. and plumes of white smoke went up 10 minutes later. The ceiling of the building housing the reactor collapsed, according to information obtained by Fukushima prefectural authorities.

At a news conference Saturday night, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano discounted the possibility of a significant leak of radioactive material from the accident. “The walls of the building containing the reactor were destroyed, meaning that the metal container encasing the reactor did not explode,” Edano said. The amount of radiation detected inside the plant after 4:00 p.m. slightly exceeded the dose people can safely receive in a year, according to information obtained by the Fukushima prefectural government. The No. 1 reactor shut down automatically soon after a massive earthquake hit the area Friday, but its emergency core cooling system failed to cool the reactor’s core sufficiently.”

Israel Among First To Respond With Humanitarian Aid To Japan Earthquake, Tsunami

Jerusalem, Israel ---- March 11, 2011 ..... Israel's heart and soul is quickly responding to the massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake that slammed Japan and the awaiting disasters of lethal Tsunami waves now threatening many nations in the Pacific.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasted no time in offering humanitarian aid to the victims of Friday’s earthquake in Japan. The Israel Prime Minister's Office and the Israel Ministry for Foreign Affairs has announced that the first group of Israel humanitarian experts is now preparing to leave for Japan.

“Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu delivered a message to the Japanese government, saying that the people of Israel express their deep sorrow over the tragedy in Japan, and that he will work to provide any help that will be required. The Japanese ambassador expressed his gratitude and said that he will convey the message to his government.”

The Pacific earthquake, which was the largest in Japan in over 100 years, hit about 230 miles northeast of Tokyo early Friday morning. Devastating tsunamis with reported waves of over 30 feet followed, wiping out and submerging entire coastal towns. Resulting tsunamis waves have been tracked across the Pacific, with possible damage feared as far away as Hawaii and the US West Coast.

Shachar Zahavi, founder and coordinator of IsraAID, The Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid, said: “IsraAID/FIRST disaster relief teams, consisting of first responders, search and rescue specialists, logisticians, emergency medical personnel and water specialists, are now preparing to travel from Israel to the region within the next 24 hours.”

IsraAID, is a coordinating organization for 17 Israel and Jewish humanitarian groups, including Israel Flying Aid which worked side by side with the IDF in Haiti, has established a Japan and Pacific Earthquake and Tsunami Emergency Fund to assist victims of this disaster. For more information please be in touch: [email protected] or 972.54.678.5033 or go to http://www.israaid.org.il.

"Israel officially offered its help an hour after the earthquake struck,” Shinomya said. “It is very heart-warming, but at this point we do not know exactly what the extent of the damage is, so it is difficult for us to say what can be done.”

IsraAid is now checking where the team could fly to a nearby country and then trying to make it to northeast Japan, where the tsunami has killed hundreds and devastated cities and towns.

“We’re in touch with local groups to check the situation in the area,” Zahavi told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “We’re trying to get to the closest airport and then get to the affected area from there.”

Following intensive consultations with the Israel Foreign Ministry and with emissaries from the Chabad organization in Japan, the UN-recognized Israel based ZAKA arranged to send a team headed by the organization's co-directors Mati Goldstein and Dovi Maisel, on Saturday evening (after the conclusion of the Sabbath). A second ZAKA team based in Hong Kong was to leave for the quake area after the conclusion of the Sabbath in their region.

ZAKA’s experts have extensive experience assisting at natural disasters around the world, including Haiti, the tsunami in Thailand and the Katrina hurricane in New Orleans.

The Japan consul in Israel, Mitoshiko Shinomya, told the Israel news Website Ynet that he was heartened by the Israel government's offer of assistance.

"Israel officially offered its help an hour after the earthquake struck,” Shinomya said. “It is very heart-warming, but at this point we do not know exactly what the extent of the damage is, so it is difficult for us to say what can be done.”

Israel, which has dealt with many disasters through wars and terrorism has become a nation of experts in emergency medicine and trauma. Israel also has considerable expertise in clean water management.

Israelis were among the first on the scene to help during the earthquake in Haiti and the Jewish tradition of reaching out to those in need dictates that they would also offer help to people in Japan and elsewhere stricken by this devastating event.

The Jewish Federations of North America is setting up an emergency relief fund to help those in affected areas, a spokesman said, and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee opened a mailbox Friday for donations to be used for Japan / Pacific disaster relief. Donations can be made at https://jdc.org/donation/donate.aspx.

"The Jewish Federations send our deepest sympathy to people affected by this terrible event," said Fred Zimmerman, chair of The Jewish Federations of North America’s Emergency Committee. “We are determined to provide emergency relief as quickly as possible and to work with our partners to provide support over the longer term as well.”

"JDC is now conducting an up-to-the-minute assessment of the situation in Japan and the Pacific Rim and has activated its network of partners to determine critical, immediate needs of the hardest-hit areas," the organization said in a statement.

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago has opened an emergency mailbox to provide humanitarian aid to the survivors on the ground.

Funds primarily will be distributed through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), with its 97-year history of providing compassionate, effective emergency relief to the non-Jewish world, and IsraAID, the coordinating body of Israeli charities devoted to global relief work.

“The destructive power of the huge earthquake that slammed Japan is incalculable, but this crisis challenges us who can act to respond,” said American Jewish Committee Executive Director David Harris. “IsraAID, our partner, often is one of the first non-governmental groups to reach the disaster and provide urgently needed assistance.”

AJC has supported IsraAID: The Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid in a number of crises, including Haiti last year, a tropical storm that hit the Philippines in 2009, a devastating earthquake in Peru in 2007, and Sri Lanka after the South Asian tsunami in 2004.

Japan Prime minister Naoto Kan has declared a nuclear emergency as his trade minister admitted that a radiation leak might have occurred at the Fukushima power plant. The reactor’s cooling system failed after the 8.9-magnitude tremor slammed northern Japan at 2.46 pm local time. Pressure in the reactor was rising despite the US Air Force flying extra coolant to the plant.

Some 20 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater have rocked Japan since today's massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit near Honshu, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The largest aftershock was a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck less than an hour after the main earthquake.

Nearly 100 earthquakes of a magnitude 5 or greater (including the 20 large ones) have also followed the main earthquake in Japan. Each magnitude 5 earthquake is strong enough to knock a chimney down.

As the 500 mph tidal wave trekked across the Pacific, tsunami warnings were issued as far away as Chile. Thousands of people living in parts of Hawaii and California were told to evacuate their beachside homes as a precaution, with the massive tidal waves expected to take 24 hours to subside.

In January 2010, CNN, FOX, BBC and other global media reported that Israel was the first and only state to have sent an advanced field hospital equipped with all that is required for surgical operations to Haiti. Doctors from various international missions sent thousands of patients requiring surgery to Israel's makeshift hospital. Israel Flying Aid and other Israel non-profit organizations stayed in Haiti for several months after the IDF returned to Israel rebuilding orphanages, feeding children and providing them with clean water and electricity.

Nuclear Fuel Rods Melting In 3 Japan Nukes Plants

Japanese officials confirmed Monday that nuclear fuel rods appear to be melting inside three reactors compromised by Friday’s earthquake, though nuclear experts differ on whether the outer chamber of a reactor melting in fact constitutes a partial “meltdown.”

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Monday that “although we cannot directly check it, it’s highly likely happening.” Unit 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in northeastern Japan exploded earlier Monday, wounding 11 workers; it had been under emergency watch for an explosion after a hydrogen blast at Unit 1 of the plant on Saturday. Edano said the Unit 3 reactor’s inner containment vessel was intact.

More than 180,000 people have been evacuated from the area, and as many as 1,500 have been examined for radiation, according to USA Today.” source – National Journal

Japan disaster: Germany halts nuclear extension plan

Germany has responded to the Japanese nuclear crisis by suspending for three months a plan to extend the lives of its ageing nuclear power stations.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government announced last year that the country's 17 power stations would close around 12 years later than planned.

The government has faced growing calls for the extension to be scrapped.

The two oldest plants that had been due to shut in the next three months are now likely to be closed after all.

The EU has called an emergency meeting on Tuesday to review safety measures at nuclear reactors across Europe.

In a statement, the EU said it wanted to assess the Japanese situation and the EU's state of preparedness "in case of similar incidents". It said the aim was to get "first-hand information on contingency plans and safety measures in place".

The Swiss government also announced on Monday that it was suspending its nuclear plans because safety was its first priority.

Switzerland currently has four nuclear plants with five functioning reactors and the country's regulatory authorities have now frozen the regulatory process for a further three sites.

However, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said his country would go ahead with its plans to build two new plants, noting that Poland did not have the same risk of earthquakes as Japan.
Protests

The German decision to suspend the controversial extended life policy for 17 power stations came after growing political pressure.

Tens of thousands of people took part in demonstrations in Germany at the weekend against the Berlin government's nuclear policy.

They formed a 45km (27mile) human chain in the south-western state of Baden-Wuerttemberg from Stuttgart to one of the power plants affected by the nuclear extension policy, at Neckarwestheim.

German voters go to the polls in Baden-Wuerttemberg later this month, and Chancellor Merkel's Christian Democrats are faring badly in opinion polls.

After Chancellor Merkel's announcement on Monday, Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen said two plants that dated back to the mid-1970s would be shut down regardless of whether the extension was renewed in three months' time.

The Biblis A plant will be phased out by the end of May and the Neckarwestheim plant will also close in the coming months.

Senior officials from all of Germany's federal states are due to discuss nuclear issues with the chancellor and top ministers on Tuesday.

Tokyo radiation levels 23 times normal: officials

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Radiation levels in Tokyo surged to 23 times normal on Tuesday, according to reports that cited readings released by the Tokyo metropolitan government. Radiation levels of .809 micro severts were recorded in central Tokyo at 10.00 a.m. local time (9.00 p.m. U.S. Eastern time), reports said. Southerly winds are believed to be pushing a radioactive plume from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which lies about 150 miles north of Tokyo.

Airforce WC-135 detect deadly Radiation over Pacific

CBC Vancouver story:

Canadians on the West Coast are becoming more concerned about potential radioactive contamination after authorities in Japan raced to combat the threat of multiple reactor meltdowns in the quake- and tsunami-damaged northeastern coast of the country.

Things are moving very fast, email me if you can confirm these stories:

    * 100 members of the [Canadian Forces] Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) deployed to Vancouver BC, Canada,
    * Province of BC emergency program relocated to Kamploops
    * 300 ICU beds made available in Vancouver and Victoria Hospitals
    * Scrubbing(decontamination washing) of long range surveillance aircraft at west coast and Hawaii Airbases
    * A tip from a reader: Sure sign of imminent radioactive fallout… milk dairies quit collecting milk for human consumption, this happened previously with large Soviet nuclear test and after Chernobyl.

Special USAF aircraft have detected large amounts of Radioactivity over the mid-north Pacific region. The radiation cloud could make landfall in western North America within 24 hours.

The WC-135 Constant Phoenix is a special purpose aircraft derived from the Boeing C-135 and used by the United States Air Force. Its mission is to collect samples from the atmosphere for the purpose of detecting and identifying nuclear explosions. It is also informally referred to as the “weather bird” or “the sniffer” by workers on the program.

What is Japan known for?  They're known for earthquakes and tsunamis.  So what do they build there?  DUH!!!

That would be like me finding a nice patch of quicksand.... and building a house on it!

“Future Earthquake Warning” Mega-Quake of epic proportions to hit the America’s?

There’s a new report which was released today, March 15, 2011 in the Kremlin prepared for Prime Minister Putin by the Institute of Physics of the Earth, in Moscow. It is a warning that the America’s are in danger of suffering a mega-quake of catastrophic proportions during the next forteen days with specific emphasis on the United States, Mexico, Central America and South American west coast regions along with the New Madrid Fault Zone region. The Russian Institute of Physics of the Earth went on to warn that catastrophic earthquakes in Asia and the sub-continent are, also, “more than likely to occur” with the 7.3 magnitude quake in Japan today being “one of at least 4 of this intensity” to happen during this same time period.

Raising the concerns of a mega quake occurring, this report says, are the increasing subtle electromagnetic signals that are being detected in the Earth’s upper atmosphere in regions all over the World, with the most intense being over the US Western coastal and Midwest regions. This is at least a warning specific to California.

Important to note are that Russian and British scientists are at the forefront of predicting earthquakes based on these subtle electromagnetic signals and have joined in an effort to put satellites in space to detect more of them.

More worrisome in this report are Russian scientists confirming the independent analysis of New Zealand mathematician and long-range weather forecaster, Ken Ring, who predicted the deadly Christchurch quake and this week issued another warning of a quake to hit on or about March 20th. Making the situation for our Planet even grimmer are the reports that our Sun is continuing to spew forth massive solar flares, the latest warned to hit our Earth today or tomorrow; prompting the Hermanus Space Weather Warning Centre (SWWC) to issue a Solar Flare warning for the Southern Hemisphere. The mention in this report of massive low pressure systems being associated with catastrophic earthquakes is especially worrisome to the United States Midwestern region, which even today is continuing to be pounded by horrific rainfalls, and most especially impacting the New Madrid Fault Zone State of Arkansas which has suffered over 800 earthquakes in the past 6 months alone.

The most interesting of all these events is the United States Army announcing this week that it is holding a rare training event involving the US Military, the CIA, Canadian officers, US Treasury and State departments, the US Agency for International Development, the Defense Threat Readiness Agency and the International Red Cross between March 21-25 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and which should the worst happen they will certainly be prepared for it.  As this report concludes, that as of yet, “no firm reliable” method for predicting earthquakes has been scientifically recognized, it is well worth noting there have been too many coincidences leading up to the catastrophic mega-quakes which are breaking out all over the World. The Obama administration ignores these reports at America’s own risk.

I've seen a lot more rubbish on the forum since I've been here. Why start complaining now?
