Delhi/Mumbai: An unruly passenger onboard an IndiGo 6E 196 flight from Mumbai allegedly started raising Islamic slogans while threatening to harm the aircraft including creating ruckus, forced authorities to hand him over to security officials when the plane landed at the IGI Airport on Wednesday.

The situation turned so noisy that cabin crew and passengers stopped the flyer from reaching the cockpit. He also tried to move forward in the plane but was restrained by the crew and fellow passengers till the aircraft landed at the airport in New Delhi.

According to a passenger, "The altercation broke out when a woman passenger complained that he was staring at her reflection in the aircraft window."

The passenger, identified as Mohammed Muslim Sheikh, had boarded the IndiGo flight (6E196) from Mumbai but suddenly got violent and started screaming and shouting and physically assaulted a crew member onboard after the woman complained that he was staring at her from window screen.

The IndiGo flight 6E 196 made a quick descent in Delhi after seeking priority landing, where Shaikh, a second-hand car dealer from Babu Tansen Chawl in Virar, was handed over to security agencies. The IGI domestic airport police have arrested Shaikh and registered a case for criminal intimidation, assault and threatening the crew. The Intelligence Bureau is quizzing him.

In the meantime, the pilot-in-command informed the airport authorities and requested for the security personnel on arrival of the flight.

After the aircraft landed at the IGI Airport, the man was deplaned and handed over to the CISF.

Confirming the incident, an IndiGo spokesperson said, "IndiGo is in the process of lodging an FIR with the police and IndiGo shall assist the security agencies in their investigation."

To deal such kind of incidents, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mooted a policy demanding severe punishment against unruly fliers in 2010, but the proposal is still pending with the civil aviation ministry.

According to the DGCA’s proposal, such offenders should be fined for Rs 5 lakh and get a jail term up to one year. Currently, they are booked under bailable offence or let off with a fine of mere Rs 1,200.
