Oh Please! Smoking is the least of our problems in this world. Yes I do smoke. Alot. Winstons to be exact. But all this crap with banning smoking inside of buildings and transportation is nonsense. I say smoke anywhere except gas staions. We have to fight off Islam, not worry if someones smoke is making us uncomfortable. Also, secondhand smoke is a sham. Of course smoking is bad and you do have a risk for cancer, but secondhand smoke? Nope. I say allow smoking everywhere again. Notice, this nation was much more conservative when smoking was everyhwere.I know Chaim would kill me for saying this.

Good on you, Cosmo.

Part of being conservative is allowing law-abiding adults to make their own decisions as long as they harm nobody else. Only liberals want to ban everything.

We have islam wanting to kill us all and liberals wanting to help them do it, yet people are preoccupied with smoking and nudie books! Let's get our priorities right.

Bollocks!

It's unproven speculation. How come nobody was dropping dead all over the place years ago when everybody smoked everywhere?

Look at food preservatives and chemicals that we have now that didn't exist years ago if you want the real culprit.

I think the reasonable path in this argument is somewhere in the middle. Smoking  is really not going to do anyone good and to think it is is only kidding yourself. The way I see it is if a person has a family with a disposition to cancer or hart disease then they should never smoke they are in enough danger of something coming on with out the help of smoke and tobacco. I have always been a Cigar smoker and at one point I would have one or two good hand made ones a day. The machine made ones that you buy in packs are just as bad as Cigarettes and you can burn through a pack of them in no time. A good hand made will last for hours and don't  have all the chemicals machine made ones do. About ten years ago I noticed that the smoking was getting to my throat and it seemed that although I enjoyed smoking the cigar it wasn't worth the after affects. At that point I stopped smoking on a daily basis and only have a really good cigar  now and then. What I am saying here is if you smoke lightly chances are you may never have a problem however heavy smoking will definitely take years off your life and destroy your bank account at 5 to 7 dollars a pack >:(  My Macanudo cigar that use to be about a dollar is now over 5 bucks each  >:( >:(  I know I am going to hear it after I say this but even as a part time smoker I would not want to see smoking restored in indoor  public places it just not fair to non smokers. Smoking is a choice its your choice but it may not be a non smokers choice.

Ha,that reminds me of al gore's stupid argument about CO2 having a direct correlation with rising climate temperature..same logic, you're singling out one factor's decrease to prove te increase of another factor, when the two are most likely unrelated

yes, and i roll my own, for the price of 2 packs i can have a carton, and the tax whores get less of my money.
i don't smoke in a building with others who don,t and i was wondering do you go up to fat people and tell them not to eat at mcdonalds.  if you concern is for their health you should.  maybe say hey dude your a fat pig, stop eating at mcdonalds.  if it is not in your face its not your problem.  why make someone angry.  like my dad used to say   go out looking for someone to kick your  ass you will find him.

It doesn't matter if it doesn't kill (It doesn't help, that's for sure), it's annoying as hell when someone is smoking next to you. If someone is asthmatic it can trigger an attack.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

The epidemic of being fat needs to be dealt with as well as the epidemic of smoking, just because there are two epidemics it doesn't mean we should fail to deal with one of them, they must both be attacked.

That is the busy-body mentality of the fascist left. All law-abiding adults are free to smoke, drink, over eat and do whatever else is legal. It's called freedom.

Focus on the enemies of freedom instead of becomming one.

A car or a truck going past does not make me start coughing or make my airways close up, a smoker standing withinthree metres of me on the other hand does.

I also think we ned to do something about the cars and trucks as well.

What a cry-baby. You live in a huge city full of trucks, buses, cars and factories and blame cigarettes for your asthma?

Have you read 'Lord of the Flies'?...........

"Sucks to your asthma!"
A car or a truck going past does not make me start coughing or make my airways close up, a smoker standing withinthree metres of me on the other hand does.

I also think we ned to do something about the cars and trucks as well.

BTW I don't live in a city.

If you're that bloomin' sensitive to smoke in an OUTDOOR environment, go and live in a bubble!

Sorry, but your completely wrong, I know of people who have died because of secind hand smoke, and of others who have become seriously ill because of it.

Bollocks!

It's unproven speculation. How come nobody was dropping dead all over the place years ago when everybody smoked everywhere?

Look at food preservatives and chemicals that we have now that didn't exist years ago if you want the real culprit.

It doesn't matter if it doesn't kill (It doesn't help, that's for sure), it's annoying as hell when someone is smoking next to you. If someone is asthmatic it can trigger an attack.

So are fat people who can't wash themselves properly and stink on hot days.
Two wrongs don't make a right.

The epidemic of being fat needs to be dealt with as well as the epidemic of smoking, just because there are two epidemics it doesn't mean we should fail to deal with one of them, they must both be attacked.
That's really disturbing.  Okay, so you want to stop smokers because the smoke affects your asthma.  How do fat people affect you?   How many other vices do we need to "attack"?

It's a typical fascist attitude, HiWarp.

The whole thrust of the anti-smoking movement is in banning smoking altogether.....not JUST in public.

It's already banned everywhere indoors. Don't tell me that smoking OUTDOORS effects anybody. That's baloney!

It will never be banned by the government because of the tax revenues.  Therein lies the hypocrisy.  If they truly wanted to do it for health reasons, cigarette sales and smoking would both be illegal.  But have you ever known a government that would willingly give up 7-8 billion dollars of revenue.  And that's the federal government; it doesn't include the state tax.

Add ten years of social security and medicare savings from the premature deaths to that figure and you're talking big $$.

I'll see pigs fly before I see a government pass up that sort of loot.

My point is many things that people do can be conceived of as harmful/annoying to society - we might just have to ban everything - if we follow this train of thought.
Impossible.  Avoid things you don't like - that is an easy rule to follow.
Stand away from the smoker at the busstop.  ;)  May not be fair but it's life.

Having started to find it relaxing is most likely a very bad sign, it probably means that it's already damaged you to the extent that your body has accepted receiving that damage on a regular basis as being normal.

Its psychological. I'm not living with my Dad at the moment and haven't done so for quite a while, recently, so it isn't a daily thing but when I do see him now its 24/7.

This smoking ban has just brought more smokers out onto the streets and in the way.

Yep it is worse because you inhale more toxins without the filter but the nicotine doesn't affect me. Lol Yacov, you have a good memory and you're right, it is a waste of money. Alcohol is just as bad.

I've never smoked in my life except to light some fireworks off when my zippo ran out of fluid. My parents never smoked either. Most of my mothers family smokes and I remember going into bars in rural Wisconsin and they were always full of so much smoke that you could see it very well from the low lit fluorescent lighttubes. Almost all my friends are in the military and they all smoke however.

Smoking is too expensive I think. Smells good though, I don't have any problem with smokers. I've had some issues with my kiddo on oxygen when I am pushing him in his wheelchair and people will light up a ciggarette right there. Makes me want to pop them in the mouth.

Cigars are more expensive, last longer, and supposably produce nicer smoke, they're equally as bad as cigarettes, if not slightly worse, as each one produces a larger total amount of smoke.

That's not true.

Cigar tobacco (like pipe tobacco) is processed differently to that which is in cigarettes. The nicotein in pipe and cigar tobacco can be absorbed through the tongue so it is NOT necessary to inhale the smoke from pipes or cigars into one's lungs as it is for cigarettes.

Cigarettes are great!

Cigars are Fantastic!

Pipes are too good to be true!

If you ask me, the Big Pharma should stop repackaging its dangerous drugs for higher profits, and commit its total resources to develop a drug which will enable us to smoke like a chimney with no risk to our health!

Instead, they squander precious resources "discovering a cure for AIDS" and inventing a vaccine against genital warts, enabling the insane to continue having sex outside of marriage free of any and all responsibility!

It never ceases to amaze me that "the tobacco Fascists" [Hitler was the first, by the way] scream and legislate that "noone should have to breathe second-hand tobacco smoke", yet are deaf, dumb, and blind when it comes to our being forced to breathe exhaust emissions & toxic pollutions from automobiles and industry!

I have yet to broach this subject to an "anti-tobacco crusader" who does not reply with a whiny voice "Look!"..."We have to have cars!"..."We can't live without them!"

I see newman and I agree as usual ;) Cheap rum and cigars that sounds like paradise :) The price of rum here in the states isn't to bad Brugal makes a fine line of rum's that are very good and priced right. It's true however about that 2 & 3 dollar price on rum in the islands. I was on a vacation once and went into some sort of open market and bought a bottle of rum for 4 bucks. I thought I might be buying a bottle of real tiger pi-s. It was one of the best rum's I ever had. When I tried to buy the same one here in the states it was over 50 bucks. As a  long  time cigar smoker I must say I have been priced out of the market. My Macanudo's that use to be a dollar each when I first started buying them  about 30 bucks a box are now 5 or so bucks each and over a 100 bucks for the same box today. Because of that I am now reduced to a now and then cigar smoker which might be for the best. I have always been able to have a smoke when I felt like it and then not for months and even years and not even think about it. People who don't smoke should never start. I have always been an occasional smoker which is still not good but not as bad as a full time smoker. Cigarettes are something that should be avoided they are addicting and toxic due to all the chemicals in them. They are easy to easy to carry around and are more accepted by innocent bystanders. Try lighting up a cigar or pipe in the company of non smokers you will get tossed out on your ear. With cigarettes you will get some grumbling but most times you will get away with it. Unless you have total willpower to be a now and again smoker its best not to get started.

I liked a pipe, I had a clay one from holland, and a wooden one from Italy.

When ever we got new wooden pipes, we put them in Cherry Brandy over night, its good for the wood, then when you smoke it you get the taste of the brandy too  O0

And of course never waste the brandy.  ;)

I have to admit that I tried Cigarettes to see what was so good about them and I liked them and ended up getting addicted but I quit right away.  I smoked less than one pack total.  So learn from me and don't try smoking, it's really addicting (especially Marlboros).

But, you don't get addicted.

You do more so, the lining inside your mouth, the chemicals it absorbed faster into your blood stream than through your lungs.

Thats why alot of medications are what they called sub lingual, example Nitro for your heart is sprayed under the tongue reaches the blood supply in around 15 seconds.

Just a piece of useless information but, the same lining thats in your mouth is in your bowel.

I used to smoke like a chimney.

Loved Rothman's of London, Drum Shag, L&M 100's.

Cigarettes are wonderful and one of life's great pleasures.

That's why it's best not to start an addiction to them which at the very least is damaging to your health.

Those who contract cancer and die are the lucky ones...the unlucky ones develop emphysema and sometimes have to have their fingers and toes amputated because of the damage to the circulatory system.

I am completely Zero tolerant on drugs of that kind. Anyone that smokes hasjish is a drug addict and a waste of space.

Alcohol does kill braincell, but so does drink water.

Its a question of abuse of it.

Yes it caused by over hydration, people drink too much water, generally when trying to lose weight on the false belief water is harmless.

They drink so much the decrease the salt levels in their blood and the water is stored in cells that is over flowing. The brain takes up the water causing it to swell and brain cells can burst with the pressure. The kidneys are overworked and can't expell the extra fluid. These people are than restricted on any fluid intake untill recovered. And yes can cause massive damage.

and if you would combine 7 liters a day with a proportional amount of salt, would it still be dangerous?

Yes because when you lose fluid of any type you lose vital salts and what is called Electrolytes. Its more than just common rock or sea salt.

Electrolytes are substances that become ions in solution and acquire the capacity to conduct electricity. The balance of the electrolytes in our bodies is essential for normal function of our cells and our organs.

Common electrolytes that are measured by doctors with blood testing include sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate. The functions and normal range values for these electrolytes are described below.

Sodium: Sodium is the major positive ion (cation) in fluid outside of cells. The chemical notation for sodium is Na+. When combined with chloride, the resulting substance is table salt. Excess sodium (such as from fast food hamburger and fries) is excreted in the urine. Sodium regulates the total amount of water in the body and the transmission of sodium into and out of individual cells also plays a role in critical body functions. Many processes in the body, especially in the brain, nervous system, and muscles, require electrical signals for communication. The movement of sodium is critical in generation of these electrical signals. Too much or too little sodium therefore can cause cells to malfunction, and extremes (too much or too little) can be fatal. A Normal blood sodium level is 135 - 145 milliEquivalents/liter (mEq/L), or in international units, 135 - 145 millimoles/liter (mmol/L).

Potassium: Potassium is the major positive ion (cation) found inside of cells. The chemical notation for potassium is K+. The proper level of potassium is essential for normal cell function. Among the many functions of potassium in the body are regulation of the heartbeat and function of the muscles. A seriously abnormal increase of potassium (hyperkalemia) or decrease of potassium (hypokalemia) can profoundly affect the nervous system and increases the chance of irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), which, when extreme, can be fatal.

The normal blood potassium level is 3.5 - 5.0 milliEquivalents/liter (mEq/L), or in international units, 3.5 - 5.0 millimoles/liter (mmol/L).

Chloride: Chloride is the major anion (negatively charged ion) found in the fluid outside of cells and in blood. An anion is the negatively charged part of certain substances such as table salt (sodium chloride or NaCl) when dissolved in liquid. Sea water has almost the same concentration of chloride ion as human fluids. Chloride also plays a role in helping the body maintain a normal balance of fluids.

The balance of chloride ion (Cl-) is closely regulated by the body. Significant increases or decreases in chloride can have deleterious or even fatal consequences:

    * Increased chloride (hyperchloremia): Elevations in chloride may be seen in diarrhea, certain kidney diseases, and sometimes in overactivity of the parathyroid glands.

    * Decreased chloride (hypochloremia): Chloride is normally lost in the urine, sweat, and stomach secretions. Excessive loss can occur from heavy sweating, vomiting, and adrenal gland and kidney disease.

The normal serum range for chloride is 98 - 108 mmol/L.

Bicarbonate: The bicarbonate ion acts as a buffer to maintain the normal levels of acidity (pH) in blood and other fluids in the body. Bicarbonate levels are measured to monitor the acidity of the blood and body fluids. The acidity is affected by foods or medications that we ingest and the function of the kidneys and lungs. The chemical notation for bicarbonate on most lab reports is HCO3- or represented as the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2). The normal serum range for bicarbonate is 22-30 mmol/L.

So in a nutshell Electrolytes are substances that become ions in solution and acquire the capacity to conduct electricity. The balance of the electrolytes in our bodies is essential for normal function of our cells and our organs. Common electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate. The functions and normal range values for these electrolytes are important, and if an electrolyte is at an extreme low or high, it can be fatal.

I also totally hate this "soft-drug"

Water kills brains? help!?

Yes it caused by over hydration, people drink too much water, generally when trying to lose weight on the false belief water is harmless.

They drink so much the decrease the salt levels in their blood and the water is stored in cells that is over flowing. The brain takes up the water causing it to swell and brain cells can burst with the pressure. The kidneys are overworked and can't expell the extra fluid. These people are than restricted on any fluid intake untill recovered. And yes can cause massive damage.

But if you drink 1,5l a day it isn't going to happen right?

no you should be drinking about 2 litres a day, this is when people drink 6-7 litres.

and if you would combine 7 liters a day with a proportional amount of salt, would it still be dangerous?

So it is not able to combine 12 litres of alcohol with sea-salt and pepper
