Report: Anti-Semitism Skyrocketing on American College Campuses
Over 520 anti-Israel events were held on American college campuses in 2014.
As Islamic terrorists open fire on concert halls, blow themselves up at cafes, stab children walking home from school, stab bystanders at bus stops, stone women for non-crimes, hang homosexuals from cranes, behead journalists, immolate hostages, and commit general mass genocide against people of all walks — it is good to know that American students are busy bringing attention to the real source of problems in the world:
The Jews.
A new, disturbing report by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reveals a marked increase in anti-Israel sentiment and activity on American university campuses over the 2014-2015 academic year.
Over 520 anti-Israel events were held on American college campuses in 2014, with 19 campuses formalizing actual “divestment resolutions.” In addition, 150 “explicitly anti-Israel events” were hosted this fall alone — a 50% increase from last year.
A primary challenge, according to the report, lies in combating the delegitimization campaigns waged by the BDS movement. BDS groups liken Israel to Apartheid South Africa and stigmatizes Israeli business and individuals for boycott.
The report describes anti-Israel events by student groups and those that have been sponsored or co-sponsored by university departments at a number of institutions, including the University of California-Berkeley, Drew University and John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
“Student groups at a number of campuses are sponsoring a range of programs and initiatives designed with one goal: to isolate, defame and delegitimize Israel,” said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO. “Many of these efforts have resulted in increased tension between students and have fostered a hostile atmosphere for pro-Israel and Jewish students. We are particularly concerned by the support these initiatives have received from faculty members.”
The most prolific anti-Semitic group active on college campuses, according to the report, is Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), which organizes a significant number of anti-Israel events and supports the BDS movement.
Some of what goes on at these university campuses reads more like Holocaust-era conspiracy theories. For instance, during a recent protest against rising tuition fees at City University of New York, SJP cited the school’s “Zionist administration” as an impediment to affordable college fees.
The ADL notes that SJP invoked “a classic anti-Semitic stereotype which blames Jews for the financial woes of others.” Other “harmful” anti-Semitic groups on campus include the Jewish Voice for Peace and American Muslims for Palestine.
“The tactics employed by the BDS movement — along with the continued efforts by anti-Israel student groups seeking to stifle discourse about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Israel in general through disruption and defamation — is a deeply troubling phenomenon that has contributed to an atmosphere at some institutions where Jewish and pro-Israel students feel uncomfortable voicing their views or even asserting their Jewish identity,” Mr. Greenblatt said.
In an attempt to battle the activity, the ADL in September 2014 started the Words to Action program, meant to teach college and pre-college students ways to effectively respond to anti-Israel bias and anti-Semitism on campus. The organization also launched @CampusADL, a Twitter handle to help students dealing with such issues.
This comes as no surprise. College groups posing as “conscientious critics” of Israel are one of anti-Semitism’s newer incarnations, and they are given a pass by the international community because BDS advocates claim they simply oppose Israeli “policies,” not people. Critics of these charlatans have long known, however, that the true intent of these organizations is not to foster dialogue or find meaningful solutions to the crisis in Israel. Rather, their intent is simply to marginalize and vilify the Jewish people.
