Another Flip-Flop: Trump’s Call for $10 Minimum Wage Spurs Confusion, Opposition

Is-Donald-Trump-CrazyNo one flip-flops on key issues the way Trump does.

Donald Trump said Wednesday that the federal minimum wage should rise to $10 — and many conservatives and experts are wondering if the Republican presidential candidate had flipped yet again on the issue.

“The minimum wage is something that will deter hiring low-skilled, inexperienced people,” Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the American Action Forum, a conservative think tank in Washington, told The Hill.

He was an economic adviser to Arizona Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008.

“Raising the minimum wage doesn’t create any new income; it’s just redistribution.”

At a news conference on Wednesday at his resort in Doral, Fla., Trump insisted that the federal minimum wage needed to be increased.

“The minimum wage has to go up,” he told reporters. “I would like to raise it to at least $10.”

The current minimum is $7.25 per hour. Democrats have hammered Trump at their convention in Philadelphia this week on his opposition to raising the rate.

Throughout the campaign, Trump has made several conflicting statements on the issue — even saying that the federal government should not increase the amount, nor set a basic wage.

The latest change also left a key adviser, Stephen Moore, an economist at the Heritage Foundation, somewhat confounded.

“I saw the statement that he made on TV, but I haven’t had the chance to talk to him in the last couple weeks about this,” Moore told the Hill.

“I don’t know exactly what he was endorsing,” he added. “The $10 minimum wage? That was the first I’d heard of that.”

Trump’s latest stance led PolitiFact of The Tampa Bay Times to declare Thursday that the billionaire had made a “full flop” on the issue.

“Trump is sending conflicting messages,” PolitiFact concluded. “Still, his contrast on the question of a federal minimum-wage hike is pretty stark.

“We rate this a full flop.”
