Donald Trump Campaign In Freefall: GOP Leaders Planning Intervention And Trump Exit
Close allies of Donald Trump are planning an “intervention” with the GOP presidential nominee to refocus his campaign “at what could be a make-or-break moment,” NBC News reported Wednesday.
Republican National Committee head Reince Priebus, former Republican New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are among those involved, NBC News’ Chuck Todd and Hallie Jackson reported, citing unnamed sources.
There is also a report from ABC News’ Jonathan Karl on Wednesday the RNC is exploring replacement scenarios if Trump were to drop out of the race suddenly in an unprecedented move.
“Priebus is furious — he has had multiple discussions with Trump telling him he needs to drastically change course,” Karl said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
NBC News reported Trump’s allies hope to get his children on board “in the attempt to rescue his candidacy.”
“Trump’s family is considered to have by far the most influence over the candidate’s thinking at what could be a make-or-break moment for his campaign,” they reported.
Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort pushed back at the report, telling Fox News’ “Happening Now“: “The only need we have for an intervention is with some media types who keep saying things that aren’t true. The candidate’s in control of his own campaign.”
According to the NBC News report, Trump is aware of the dissatisfaction within the party, and there’s “absolutely no indication Trump is considering leaving the race.”
Adviser Kellyanne Conway told NBC News: “I would push back on any formal report that the candidate is going to leave the race.”
