So-called “physician-assisted suicide” is murder.

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has signed legislation that will allow terminally ill patients to legally end their own lives, the Washington Post reports.

The legislation will now be sent to the Capitol for a 30-day review period, and the earliest the law could take effect is October 2017.

The Post notes that some critics have promised to push Congress to use its power to void the law.

The law is modeled after a similar measure passed in Oregon in 1998, and allows doctors to prescribe fatal medication to patients with less than six months to live, according to the Post.

Similar laws have been passed in Washington state, Colorado, Vermont and California.

Advocates of the legislation argue it gives terminally ill adults the freedom to die in comfort.
