Swedish ISIS terrorists to get free jobs and housing when they return home

“Returning ISIS members should be helped with therapy and getting a job” says Rasmus Persson (Center party), mayor of Örebro. But the idea is looked down upon by terror researcher Magnus Norell.

“If you want to increase recruitment to the ISIS, it’s a fantastic idea”, he says.

Earlier this week it was reported that two Swedish ISIS sympathizers have died fighting in northern Iraq. Both were residents of Örebro.

One measure that has been discussed is to provide psychological counseling and job efforts to persons who have returned after fighting with the Islamic State.

“If you’ve been fighting with ISIS one need support and help. Partly because they have terrorist views, but also because they have been through terrible things.“, Rasmus Persson says.

He emphasizes that he thinks that the ISIS members will be subject to legal consequences, but it is a matter for Parliament. His job as a local politician is another.

“Participates man in a war in another country, you should be punished, but there is no law for it. At the local level, it is unreasonable to support and help.”

He continues:

“What is the alternative? To close your eyes and not give any help at all? If you want to influence people so one must offer an alternative.”

“The message is that it’s okay”

Magnus Norell, a researcher specializing in terrorism, saw the proposal at the ankles.

“If you want to increase recruitment to ISIS, it’s a fantastic idea. The message is you it is okay to behave like this and when you come back we’ll fix with jobs, housing and therapy”, he says.

But his colleague Magnus Ranstorp, terrorism researcher at the National Defense University, disagrees.

“This is absolutely the way to go. It is about applying harsh police action while working proactively with those who come home and those who are planning to go”, he says.

What do you say to those who think this is coddling terrorists?

“Then you do not know how this terror fight really works. Preventive and repressive measures go hand in hand”, says Magnus Ranstorp.
