Amnesty International Rejects Motion to Combat Anti-Semitism – The Only Resolution Rejected
At its annual conference, “human rights” organization Amnesty International rejected a motion to address the rise of anti-semitic attacks in Britain.
The measure was brought before the international conference after Amnesty’s UK Board affirmed the resolution in March. Despite the British branch’s support, however, the motion was ultimately defeated Sunday, 468 to 461.
According to Amnesty International UK member Andrew Thorpe-Apps, who first tabled the motion, it was the “the only resolution to be defeated during the whole conference.”
Thorpe-Apps said he presented the resolution because he wanted to see Amnesty International, which has been “outwardly pro-Palestine,” [there is no such thing as a “Palestine”] also show its solidarity with Jews in the midst of a rise in anti-semitism in the country.
“I recently joined and I believe passionately about human rights” said Thorpe-Apps. “I was aware that the organisation has been outwardly pro-Palestine [that means Pro-Arab Muslim terrorists in Israel] in the past but it hasn’t stood up for the Jewish population and I think it would be good if they did that. I’m not Jewish myself but I’ve been appalled by what I’ve seen in the press facing the Jewish community and an organisation like Amnesty should really add their voice to that as they do with other human rights issues.”
UK press officer Neil Durkin said the rejection of the measure followed a “really interesting debate” about the group’s unwavering condemnation of discrimination, but was rejected due to what he the group felt was too narrow of a focus:
“After a really interesting debate where everyone condemned discrimination against all ethnic and religious groups, our membership decided not to pass this resolution calling for a campaign with a single focus,”said Durkin. “Amnesty International fights against discrimination in all its forms, and will continue to do so.”
As for Amnesty UK, Durkin said the board would be “considering the outcome of the vote at their next meeting.”
