State Dept admits Hillary did not turn over all emails
Last March, Hillary Clinton told reporters she had turned over to the State Department every email from her secret system that bore any relation to her work as Secretary of State. “I…provided all my emails that could possibly be work-related,” Clinton told reporters.
Now the State Department has admitted that is not true.
Around 5:30 Thursday evening, a courier from the State Department delivered a packet of documents to the offices of the House Select Committee on Benghazi. The documents contained an admission that Libya-related emails between Clinton and longtime associate Sidney Blumenthal that Blumenthal turned directly over to the Benghazi committee had not been given by Clinton to the State Department. The discovery of the emails proved that Clinton, contrary to her public claim, had not turned over all her emails “that could possibly be work related.”
Committee sources suspected that State had carefully planned the disclosure, either telling some media outlets and Clinton’s office before informing the House committee or informing them all simultaneously. Minutes after the courier dropoff, the committee received an inquiry with a press account attached to it that included Clinton’s side of the story.
Benghazi committee chairman Trey Gowdy released a statement shortly after State’s admission. “The revelation these messages were not originally produced to the State Department by Clinton is significant and troubling,” Gowdy said. “This has implications far beyond Libya, Benghazi and our committee’s work. This conclusively shows her email arrangement with herself, which was then vetted by her own lawyers, has resulted in an incomplete public record.”
One more thing. Included in the packet given to the committee Thursday evening were emails that Clinton had in fact turned over to the State Department but which the State Department had not turned over to the committee. So it appears that not only Clinton, but the State Department too, have not been as transparent as they have claimed in the email affair.
