Ovo je Srbija - This is Serbia
« on: January 29, 2009, 10:03:36 AM »
I like this Serbian song:

Znaš li odakle si, sine
pogledaj planine sive
Zejtinlikom cveće procvalo
Šumadijom sunce zasjalo

Refren 2x
A, ovo je Srbija
govore grobovi ratnika
iz slavnog vremena

Cvetovi kao od vina
stihovi ratnih sudbina
još cvetaju kao nekada
kraj Drine sa cvetnih livada

Proži ćeš puteve duge
videčeš krajeve druge
ponesi odavde jedan cvet
nek' svi vide, nek' zna ceo svet

Refren 2x
Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help (Psalms 146:3)

Boj na Kosovu - Battle of Kosovo(1389 yr)

Subtitled excerpt from a 1989 film, The Battle of Kosovo. Part when Serbian knight Milos Obilic kills Turkish sultan Murad I as he had sworn to do the previous evening on a dinner with other Serbian knights before Czar Lazar.

"No body believes the Serb converted to Islam. If a Turk has blood to his elbows, the convert must have it to his shoulders."  ;D

Obilic:I draw a line with my blood,Hamza.
Hamza:What line?
Obilic:Between me and you!

Excellent ethnic music!
Is flute a Serbian national musical instrument?

Intresting, why "Serbie"? Shouldn't it be "Srbijo"?

Or is it a dialect of Serbian?

It is older Serbian language spoken in 18th and 19th century with remaining parts of Old Slavic language(Staroslovenski jezik).Old Slavic language is the oldest in Europe after Greek and Latin.

It's not a dialect. No one speak like that today. We can understand it,but we don't speak like that.Influence of Russian language was big in XVIII century, and you can see that some words in the text are more like a kind of Russian.

Example is also word "vostani".We say "ustani"(rise up,stand up).

PS
I'm sorry,but I can't find the translation.The text is really nice.

Yes, I noticed it is closer to Russian :)

In modern Russian it sounds "Восстань, Сербия" ("Vosstanj Serbija") for "Rise up Serbia",
and "Встань, Сербия" ("Vstanj, Serbija") for "Stand up Serbia"

Vostani Serbije (Arise, Serbia; Serbian Cyrillic: Востани Сербије), also known as Pesma na insurekciju Serbijanov (Ode to the Uprising of the Serbs) was a national anthem of revolutionary Serbia, written by Dositej Obradović during the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman Empire in 1804. It is one of the best known patriotic songs in the country, and for some time it was considered as a potential national anthem following the replacement of the old Yugoslav anthem Hej Sloveni. The poem was set to music thrice by V. Baronijan, Z. Vauda and Lj. Manasijević. [1]

[edit] Lyrics
Latin
Vostani Serbije! Vostani carice!
I daj čedom tvojim videt tvoje lice.
Obrati serca ih i očesa na se,
I daj njima čuti slatke tvoje glase.

Vostani Serbije!
Davno si zaspala,
U mraku ležala.
Sada se probudi
I Serblje vozbudi!

Ti vozdigni tvoju carsku glavu gore,
Da te opet pozna i zemlja i more.
Pokaži Evropi tvoje krasno lice,
Svetlo i veselo, kako vid Danice.

Vostani Serbije!
Davno si zaspala,
U mraku ležala.
Sada se probudi
I Serblje vozbudi!

Bosna sestra tvoja na tebe gleda.
I ne želi tebi nikakova vreda
Ko tebe nenavidi, ne boji se boga
Od kojeg tebi ide pomoć mnoga.

Vostanie Serbie!
Davno si zaspala,
U mraku ležala
Sada se probudi
I Serblje vozbudi!

Hercegova zemlja i Černaja Gora
Daleke države i ostrovi mora
Svi tebi pomoć nebesnu žele,
Sve dobre duše tebi se vesele.

Vostanie Serbie!
Davno si zaspala,
U mraku ležala
Sada se probudi
I Serblje vozbudi!

 Cyrillic

 Literal English translation
Arise, Serbia! Arise, empress!
and let your children see your face.
Make them turn their hearts and eyes on you,
and let them hear your sweet voices.

Arise, Serbia!
You fell asleep a long time ago,
And have lain in the dark.
Now wake up
And rouse the Serbs!

Raise high your imperial head,
So that land and sea may recognize you again.
Show Europe your delightful face,
As bright and cheerful as that of Venus (-- the morning star).

Arise, Serbia!
You fell asleep a long time ago,
And have lain in the dark.
Now wake up
And rouse the Serbs!

Your sister Bosnia looks upon you
And she doesn't want any offend
Who doesn't love, he doesn't afraid of God
Who give you a lot of help

Arise, Serbia!
You fell asleep a long time ago,
And have lain in the dark.
Now wake up
And rouse the Serbs!

Herzeg's Land (-- Herzegovina) and Black Mount (-- Montenegro),
Faraway countries and sea islands
They all want heavens help to you
All good souls are kin to you

Arise, Serbia!
You fell asleep a long time ago,
And have lain in the dark.
Now wake up
And rouse the Serbs!

The most beautiful Serbian song I've ever heard is this:

I like the performance of this child choir. It really touches the heart.

Another good version is this:

But in this version I can't understand all the lyrics, especially at 0:50 - 1:00

I LOVE this version!

This version sounds great. But the voice of the singer is sad and so are the images. As far as I understand, the initial version didn't have the message of something lost.  Was this version written after of the loss of Kosovo?
