Oh, I do understand him. When you live as a minority, you constantly live in fear as to what the majority will think. Silverstein wishes to prove to the world that the fact that he's Jewish means absolutely nothing to him so that they will look at him kindly. The reason there are people like Peace Now, Neturei Karta, ISM, and Silverstein is because we have lived a non-national existence for so long that the idea of reconstituting the Jewish nation is frightening to many Jews.

Is that something akin to the fear of success that Anthony Robins talks about, or is it like the tribes in the wilderness with Moshe who didn't want to enter the land of Israel?

What puzzles me is that the Reb Tevye generation who suffered so horribly remained true to their faith and culture, but modern Jews who have never had it so good want to defecate on the graves of their ancestors. 'Meshuganah' is not sufficient to describe this madness.
