Title: Can Anyone Recommend A Safe, Not So Expensive Neighborhood In Queens?
Post by: Lisa on February 13, 2008, 09:39:29 PM
I'm seriously thinking of moving out of Manhattan.  But I want to go someplace that has a Jewish community, or at least some Synagogues.

Rego Park & Forest Hills is very nice, and way cheaper than Manhatten, and has loads of us Jooz. Check it out.  O0

And if you work in the city you have easy access to the R, V, E and F trains.  :)

I can recommend a great place for you to stay:  The Bates Motel.  Norman keeps the place nice!

Also try Bayside, Little Neck, and Douglaston.  Unfortunately many Queens areas are not as nice as they used to be.

Lisa, I would try forest Hills, Rego Park and Kew Garden Hills. You can find cheap apartments in all three places. If you try KGH, just make sure you don't go looking to the left of Main Street which is millionaires world.

I lived in Sunnyside.  It was safe.  I had a 950 sq. ft. apartment for $1,300.00.

Lisa , I'm an expert on Queens. There are plenty of good neighborhoods here. Forest hills is nice but expensive. I live close to FH but away from the center in a place called middle village. There is a synagogue here..There aren't many Jews in this area..this is mostly Italian, Irish, German. Just to show you how safe it is...I usually jog through the park here at 11 pm and there are many women who jog there as well with no problems (doubt if you can do that in washington heights).

Ask me any ques about queens. I lived here all my life.

Lisa, won't you miss the Manhattan lifestyle? You know............. sitting in the coffee shop, talking about nothing, Kramer barging into your apartment every 5 minutes............Oh, hang on. I'm thinking of someone else.

I'd ask you to move to SoCal, but the cost-of-living would be nearly as bad, and you'd be surrounded by cucarachas.

Thanks for all your suggestions, guys.  I am looking to rent an apartment.

New Yorker and DWI, do you know how much studios and 1 bedrooms go for in FH?
Forest Hills is very nice, but some parts of it off of Queens Blvd. look awfully quiet in the evenings.  Is Forest Hills a place where you can get around without a car?

Yacov, I was born in Kew Gardens.  I remember there being one subway on Queens Blvd., but other parts of it being kind of suburban, and far from the trains.

Ari, I am familiar with Bayside, Douglaston and Little Neck, as they are very close to Great Neck, where I grew up.  As far as I can tell, Douglaston is very suburban with not many apartment buildings.  From what I see, I would need a car to get around.

Bayside is nice, especially Bell Blvd.  But it seems to me that I would need a car to get around the rest of the place.  However, if I am mistaken, please let me know.  Also, are there young single people who live there?  Or is it just families?

And Little Neck seems to be quite suburban.  Besides which, it's a little too close to Great Neck.

Scriabin, I recently visited Sunnyside, and it seems OK.

Italian Zionist, I'll PM you with my questions.

Mord, I am looking to spend $1,400 at the most per month on rent.

Thanks again, everyone.

Hey Lisa,
I lived in Kew Gardens in the 80's, it's a great neighborhod, still. I recommend it!
Forest Hills is great place and has a bit more life to it, perhaps. I highly recommend it!
Sunnyside is not high on my list, to much diversity.LOL. + Too many Romanian there !
Middle Village is nice but there aren't many Jewish people there.
Go with Forest Hill as choice 1, and Kew Gardens 2.  O0

Newman, I would like to move because I can't really afford the rent where I am now.  And the amount of money I'm paying is considered reasonable by Manhattan standards.

Lisa, $1400 a month will get you a place in Rego Park no problem. Give it a look, it's nice, lots of shopping, Austin street is a stone's throw away with all the movie theatres and resturants, and it is convenient to Manhatten by subway.

I've heard it's rediculous in Manhattan (unless you get a rent controlled apartment-for which you pay $20K bribe up-front).

What would 500 sq ft in Greenwich Village cost?

Oh okay. Why not think about Brooklyn then? Someplace like Williamsburg, Windsor Terrace, Midwood, Marine Park or Gravesend. All safe, fairly reasonable prices, don't need a car, and easy to get into the City.

Yes Midwood is very Jewish, so is Borough Park right next to it. They have the biggest Hasidic and Orthodox populations outside of Israel. Williamsburg also has alot, mostly Satmars. Gravesend is mostly Italian, Russian and Sefardic Jews. Marine Park is mostly Irish and Italian but it borders Midwood and it has expanded into it in recent years and now has alot of Jews.

Hmmm...Woodside is a possibility.  Is that near Sunnyside?  And how do the rents compare?  Is there any Jewish community there?  Do you like it?  Is it safe?  Are there any other subways besides the 7 train?  Please let me know.

As a matter of fact it is.  I live in a co-op that is in Woodside.  It within reason and is waling distance from the Sunnyside and Woodside Jewish Centers.  And is about 10-15 minutes from the 59th street bridge and the midtown tunnel.  I live near the No. 7 train and LIRR and 2 buses that goes into Manhattan. Also there is a bus that goes to Rockaway beach.

Yes, Lisa, probably in the areas I mentioned a car would be desired, unless you lived pretty close to the Railroad line I guess, with direct access into the city.  I think the Bayside/Bay Terrace area does have a number of apartments for rent.  Little Neck and Douglaston are a bit more tricky.  Not as many apartments, but a number of people tend to rent out houses, and co-ops remain pretty reasonable.  All 3 have pretty decent size Jewish communities, and singles as well as families.  Good luck in whatever your choice.   O0

P.S.  I have always liked visiting Forrest Hills, though I never looked into living there.
