In this week's Ask JTF, Chaim mentioned that he would like to see the idea of cool redefined to mean right wing values. (I'm paraphrasing, my memory is not so good.)
What does cool mean to you? And how would you like our young people to think about coolness?
For me, cool has to do with taking pride in hard work, hard-won victories against evil, creating a family that works for righteous causes (as G-d defines righteous).
What are your thoughts?
-
Cool means looking good without looking like a slut, being intelligent enough to engage in serious conversations, having a good sense of humor, being kind to others, and taking responsibility for yourself.

Cool is a word used by immature kids or immature "adults", and thus it can only have a childish meaning. The childish meaning that they give to it.
It can mean, "he can be trusted", along with other different meanings showing the approval from the child-mind.

I agree, it has more of an adolescent childish-slang affiliation, but I agree it should be replaced with a more descriptive word.

If you want to know cool. Watch Happy Days. The Fonz is the absolute COOL. He is also Jewish, his parents survived the Holocaust and migrated to the US.

Goodness me.. Thinking people manage fine without the word.
I use the word DECENT
And it has nothing to do with how smoothly people talk, or how stylish they are in the way they dress.

cool means keeping your composure under fire. A person who is cool is able to keep his powers of reason while the whole world is moving underneath.

there's a word for that,
"Calm"
The word cool out of context is a very ambiguous word. Along with other criticism I have heaped on it.

agreed. it is childish and show a limited vocabulary. if a replacement word is implemented, it will be another one syllable, childish, easy to pronounce word. i even hesitate to call it a word. it is slang.
-
I disagree with the idea that the concept of cool is necessarily childish. It evokes a very specific feeling, one of being self-assured and at the same time free of needless worry. The term has a meaning that is both specific and yet far reaching. If you can think of a word that conveys the same broad and specific meaning as the word cool, then what is it?

we don't know yet. back in the '50s, the words used were "neat," and in the '60s, "groovy." i guess we all use the word "cool" because it is word that is part of our culture. seems everyone uses this word, unless they are over 85+

in a crisis, cool means that.
But around a pool table, where everybody is like that, it means more like a Fonz character.
confident, secure, balanced, composed,
Infact, Fonz is the definition of cool, as mentioned. It doesn't just mean confident, secure, balanced, composed. Alot of accountants are those things but not considered cool!

I'm not going to get into a frivolous argument over the etymology of slang words.
I think that people who are informed, rational, opinionated and not afraid to tell the truth regardless of how unpopular or "politically-correct" it may be are cool. Chaim is cool. Rabbi Kahane zt"l was cool. Knowledge is cool. Morality and decency is cool. Standing for principles is cool.

"cool" doesn't stress great moral principles.
James Bond is another, a distant second to The Fonz.

A cool person can have a few meanings:
one is when one lacks the showing of his passion...he's cool and calm..
A cool person is someone who goes against the status quo and with great confidence and looks good doing it...
A cool person can be someone who he probably get hypothermia if the temperature was 10 degrees less.
A cool person can be someone who's comfortable

Cool just means that you are loyal. So am I screwed up? When I say a person is 'cool with me' that means that I think they are 'loyal' and I might trust them, but usually I dont use any slang- but that is what I said as a 20 yr old person.

no, not screwed up, because really you mean it in the traditional sense of temperature, that they help keep you from rising in temperature by not heating you up with anger!

I do help out some people on this forum, in fact. I'm not shy about correcting people when I think it's appropriate. What I do not do however, is call people "pathetic", and then claim I'm helping them.

If you look at what I wrote in this thread, where I said pathetic, I didn't call anybody pathetic. Some of the things written in the thread were pathetic.
I wrote it in response to angrychinesekahanist. He is not pathetic, I have never come close to even suggesting that he was.
But I think that particular post of his was. Infact, it was so pathetic, a few posts like that could ruin a thread!
Generally I haven't found his posts pathetic. This is the first time I have criticised any of his posts. And I certainly wasn't criticising him.

Cool? Well, I think we need to defeat stereotypes of Jews. Most people think of Jews as scrawny weak bookworms who either become a lawyer, accountant, or dentist. I'd like to see a little more modernization without going against Torah. I think sometimes this scares away younger members. I'd like to see some sort of hobbies thread or meetup for Jews involving some sort of activity. Maybe a fishing trip or camping trip, something like that (if it's not forbidden). I'd like to see another JDL camp (legal), something to get youth interested. Positive values, I always feel like the forums vastly negative and although there is a lot of negative, we need to focus on positive things in life to keep our sanity.
I think if we had some subjects about nature, hobbies, computers, science would give us some more diverse topics as it's all bundled into the general section right now.

a few arguments..
Considering the argument that - JTF is a religious-political organisation and this would detract from our goals..
I think it wouldn't detract. The JTF forum is more, a community of lke minded people. .
Naturally, there are threads on many subjects that you could say detract.
OTOH, if media hear chaim's message and look at the forum, then having all those other sections would detract.
And, the concept of jewish places to discuss X Y and Z, is somewhat flawed in that the reality is that these disciplines exist in the gentile world. That's where all the resources are, that's how you make it.
It can be an excuse to bring jews together, but then the computers or mma or whatever is an excuse, it's not serious.

Your right, however it does get people interested. I brought individuals over who were interested primarily in guns and firearm ownership and now they are reading other sections of the forum and getting involved. It's like marketing and promotions, you have to have a way to get people interested and give them "samples" before serving the main course. It's easier conditioning.

maybe after the election things will be a bit different, but it looks like chaim wants to focus on obama.

well, a couple of decades later, many get steriotypically short fat and bald. There's obviously a surplus of calories at that stage.
Working out is very easy. Infact it's too easy.
From what I recall reading, according to natural bodybuilders(i.e. not drugged up with steroids), more than 40min working out is the right amount and more is pointless because of cortizone buildup!
strength trainers might do more, and perhaps don't train to failure, but anyhow
It's all a mind thing at the end of the day. If somebody has it in them to work 9-5 and shower and brush their teeth. They have it in them to fit a 40min workout in every other day. Or twice a week. It requires good eating though. If not getting enough calories, you can be strong but not really strong, and it's healthier to get enough calories! Eating is very important.. This again is why i'm so in favour of the healthy eating section. And expertise in eating is something that comes naturally to some , like americanhero or mord, and you perhaps - Israelite, and others, and you can share your knowledge and wisdom in this area, to those less fortunate than yourselves!
