Man assaulted for not removing yarmulke

BOULDER – Two suspects were arrested for assaulting a man who refused to take off his yarmulke.

The assault happened in the 1100 block of Pearl Street in Boulder on Dec. 19, 2014.

The victim was at the Sundown Saloon with friends when three unknown males approached him. One of the males told the victim to remove his yarmulke, a skullcap traditionally worn by Jewish men.

The victim refused to take it off, saying he was Jewish. One of the men hit the victim in the head with a glass, knocking him down.

Police believe a second suspect kicked the victim.

The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries.

Bryan Jamsheed Tayefeh, 29, was arrested Dec. 19 and charged with second-degree assault and bias-motivated crime.

An arrest warrant was issued for Yotam Monjack, 27. He was out of the country and arrested Jan. 8 upon his return.

The Anti-Defamation League has condemned the assault.

Scott L. Levin, the ADL Mountain States Regional Director, released the following statement:

“We strongly condemn this appalling assault in which a Jewish man was allegedly targeted because of his religion.

We applaud the Boulder Police Department for swiftly and thoroughly investigating the incident as a possible hate crime, and welcome the arrest of the suspects on bias-motivated crime charges.

Hate crimes not only affect the individual victim of the crime, but also resonate throughout the entire community. When a victim is targeted for a crime because of his or her actual or perceived religion, other members of that group and other groups may feel unsafe and unwelcome. The arrest and charges send the important message that hate crimes are unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our community.”
