The White House has announced yet another way they are acting on climate change by giving away solar panels to low-income residents in inner cities around the country.

The announcement was made Tuesday in Baltimore with the help of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD). The new initiative vows to “increase access to solar for all Americans” but especially lower income communities, like in Baltimore, so they can save on utility bills.

In addition to providing the panels, the federal government is hoping to “expand opportunities” for those citizens and help them find jobs in solar energy. This plan aims to meet President Obama’s goal of training 75,000 workers and military veterans for the solar industry by 2020.

However, in her piece “It Costs You a Fortune For Obama To Be Green,” Diana Furchtgott-Roth explains that in 2013, only 4,130 people worked as installers of solar panels. Their median income was just over $39,000. And at that time, Obama’s goal was only to train 50,000 workers for the solar industry — he’s now added 25,000 more towards his goal.

She reminds that the president is less interested in the Keystone XL pipeline even though it would create 20,000 direct jobs and secure the jobs of 11 million Americans who work in or in jobs related to the oil and gas industry. But Obama remains focused on his climate agenda.

“Training people for nonexistent jobs and browbeating companies into investing in more costly forms of energy is no way to stimulate economic growth and create jobs,” Roth writes. “If Mr. Obama wants to pander to his environmental base, there must be some cheaper way.”
