The confirmation hearings for President-elect Trump’s pick for Attorney General, Senator Jeff Sessions, are underway and Democrats have wasted no time in their attempts to malign and smear Sessions. Interestingly enough, after eight years of Democrats looking the other way as President Obama has run roughshod over the Constitution, usurping it at every turn in order to exact his will and agenda in his “fundamental transformation of America,” they are now suddenly for the “rule of law.”

Listening to Democrats, you would think they revere the Constitution as the document upon which our country and system of government is built rather than the way the way the really see it — as a “living and breathing document” so that they can fight to do away with or pervert the parts they do not like. You know, the parts that put constraints on government.  If you were going to put your money on one person who was not going to let Democrats get away with their inaccurate presentation of themselves as sudden believers in the rule of law, then the person you’d bet on would be Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Cruz, the former Solicitor General for the Great State of Texas, used part of his time during Sessions’ hearing to absolutely excoriate Democrats on Senate Judiciary Committee and remind them of all the times over the past eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency that they looked the other way, not giving a damn about the rule of law. Instead, they looked the other way as government agencies, including the Department of Justice, were weaponized under Barack Obama to go after those who opposed him politically or to push Obama’s agenda, even if it meant endangering the lives of Americans due to unconstitutional actions.

“This has been an interesting day at this hearing, listening to Democratic senator after Democratic senator give speeches and praise the rule of law. And I am heartened by that. I am encouraged by that because for eight years it’s been absent. For eight years we have seen a Department of Justice consistently disregarding the rule of law.”

Cruz reminded the Democrats of the illegal gun running scheme by Holder and Obama which led to the death of border patrol agent Brian Terry.

“When Eric Holder’s Department of Justice allowed illegal gun transactions, illegally sold guns to Mexican gun traffickers as part of Fast and Furious, guns that were later used to murder border patrol agent Brian Terry, the Democratic members of this committee were silent. When Eric Holder was found in contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with Congress’ investigation into Fast and Furious, once again, the Democratic members of this committee were silent.”

He did not let them forget the message their silence sent when they sat and did nothing when American citizens were targeted for simply exercising their First Amendment rights in the political process.

“When the IRS and the DOJ illegally targeted United States citizens and businesses for exercising their First Amendment views, for exercising their roles in the political process, Democratic members of this committee were silent. When the Department of Justice refused to fairly investigate the IRS targeting citizens and indeed assigned the investigation to a liberal partisan Democrat who had given over $6,000 to President Obama and Democrats, Democrats on this committee were silent.”

“When numerous members of this committee called on the attorney general to appoint a special prosecutor to ensure that justice was done in the IRS case, Democrats on this committee were silent. When the Department of Justice used Operation Choke Point to target legal businesses because they disagreed politically with those businesses, the Democrats on this committee were silent.”

He made sure to point out the taxpayer dollars spent by the Obama Department of Justice in funding sanctuary cities, which defy federal immigration law, the release of criminal illegals which endangers Americans, and the illegal ransom paid to Iran, the largest state sponsor of terror in the world.

“When the Obama Justice Department sent millions of dollars of taxpayer money to sanctuary cities that were defying federal immigration law, the Democrats on this committee were silent. When the Obama administration refused to enforce federal immigration laws and unilaterally rewrote those laws, the Democrats on this committee were silent. When the Obama administration released tens of thousands of criminal illegal aliens, including rapists and murderers into the general population, Democrats on this committee were silent. When the Department of Justice signed off on the Obama administration paying a nearly $2 billion ransom to Iran contrary to federal law, the Democrats on this committee were silent.”

Of course, there are also the issues of Obamacare, illegal recess appointments, and the release of terrorists for a deserter without following the law related to the notification of Congress.

“When the Obama administration ignored and rewrote provision after provision of Obamacare, contrary to the text of the law, the Democrats on this committee were silent. When the Obama administration signed off on illegal recess appointments that the Supreme Court had to strike down unanimously, the Democrats on this committee were silent. And when the Obama administration released five Guantanamo terrorists without the prior notification of Congress, the Democrats on this committee were silent.”

Throughout all of this, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee were silent, and their silence was deafening but spoke volumes as to their partisan attitude.

“That pattern has been dismaying for eight years. But I take today as a moment of celebration. If once again this committee has a bipartisan commitment to rule of law, to following the law, that is a wonderful thing and it is consistent with the tradition of this committee going back centuries.”

When it came to Obama’s use of government agencies and the Department of Justice as his own personal weapons, either against Americans or endangering of Americans, the Democrats were silent. They are fine with tyranny and ignoring the “rule of law” as long as the person in question has a D next to their name.

Kudos to Senator Ted Cruz for calling them out on this.
