High School Student Suspended for Defending Military

A Virginia high school student was suspended after he stood up in the cafeteria and defended the military against another student who had made derogatory remarks aimed at soldiers.

Matthew Clark is a member of the Army National Guard, and when he heard another student criticize the military, he had to stand up for what he believes in. His sister recorded the video from her lunch table. She captured what her brother said and posted it to Facebook:

He just said that, troops that risk their lives every day are a disgrace to the military, and that they shouldn’t be in the military, and he can do our job better than we can. Too scared to risk our lives for our country, to die for our country. Didn’t you say that? I just wanted everybody to know that.

The student Matthew was calling out can be seen getting up and angrily smashing something on the ground before forcefully removing his sweater and walking out. A school resource officer can be seen pursuing the angry young man. Matthew remained calm the entire time and was in no way aggressive. But school officials suspended him anyway saying he “created a major disturbance in the cafeteria, provoking some students to anger and creating a potentially unsafe environment.”

Matthew’s father, Keith Clark, is a retired Army veteran and was not too happy with the outcome. He spoke to school leaders and said it was his son who was being bullied. In the video posted to social media by Matthew’s sister, she said her brother was cussed at and harassed and yet no punishment was given to the other boy.

Mr. Clark was also upset that the principal talked with another student about Matthew’s “potential punishment,” as WHSV reports. He said that violated his son’s privacy and added, “I thought [administrators] were trained to make those decisions on their own.”

Matthew’s father also told officials that he was angry that his son was denied a school lunch and went on to appeal his son’s suspension. They denied it, saying they removed the subject of the military and simply treated it as “someone who was standing up voicing their opinion in a public forum,” according to WHSV.

“It’s very much a military issue, the individual made derogatory statements towards the military, my son who is a private in the military defended the military,” Clark said to the news station.
