College Kids Now Smoking More Pot than Tobacco
A new study finds that more college-age kids are now smoking pot than they are tobacco.
The Monitoring the Future study by researchers at the University of Michigan found that pot bypassed tobacco last year as the toke of choice among full-time undergraduates.
About six percent of full-time students reported using marijuana at least twenty times over the last month, while only five percent said they smoked cigarettes as often over the same period.
Researcher Lloyd Johnston says that 2014 marked the first time pot was consumed more than tobacco in the 35 years the research has been conducted.
“It’s clear that for the past seven or eight years there has been an increase in marijuana use among the nation’s college students,” the study finds. “And this largely parallels an increase we have been seeing among high school seniors.”
