At least 95 dead, dozens wounded as string of bombings hit Iraq:

A series of bombings across Iraq has left at least 95 people dead. The blasts targeted Shia Muslims in Baghdad and Basra.

Ten car bombs detonated in Baghdad in Shiite neighborhoods, killing at least 48 people and injuring more than 150, authorities announced.

In neighboring Balad, 80 kilometers north of the capital, a car bomb killed 14 pilgrims on a bus, according to an anonymous local official.

Nine people were killed in one of two car bombs in Basra, a predominately Shia city, southeast of Baghdad.

"I was on duty when a powerful blast shook the ground," a local police officer told Reuters. "The blast hit a group of day laborers gathering near a sandwich kiosk," he said. One of the dead bodies was still clutching a blood-soaked sandwich in his hand."

Five other people were killed in a second blast inside a bus terminal in Saad Square, also in Basra, police and medics said.

Shiite worshipers were also targeted leaving a mosque in the city of Hillah, killing nine and wounding 26.

Monday’s violence also spread to Sunni areas of the country.

A car bomb in Samarra exploded near a gathering of Sunni militia waiting outside a military compound, killing three and wounding 13. According to officials, eight policemen have been killed near the town of Haditha, in the western province of Anbar, after gunmen ambushed two police patrols.

Another 13 bodies, including eight policemen were found in Anbar by the authorities in a desert area. The victims allegedly were kidnapped by gunmen on Friday and shot in the head.

The bombings are the latest in a series of attacks in both Sunni and Shiite regions, prompting fears that widespread sectarian violence is once more gripping the country.

Syria: dozens of Lebanese Hizbollah fighters killed in battle of Qusair:

Dozens of Lebanese Hizbollah fighters have been killed during an all-out offensive on the strategic border town of Qusair in Syria, a development that reveals the militia's unmitigated support for President Bashar al-Assad.

 Hizbollah and Syrian government troops have seized nearby hamlets and launched a hammering attack on the city, threatening a supply line that has helped sustain rebel opposition groups in the provincial capital Homs for more than two years.

"We have at least 25 martyrs," Mustafa Taha, the head of the municipal council for the Hizbollah heartland town of Hermel told The Daily Telegraph. "Our leader, Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah has said we will use every means that we have to support President Assad".

A press release from the rebel Free Syrian Army joint command claimed the leader of the Hizbollah operation on Qusair, Mustafa Bdr Aldeen, was among the dead.

The Iran-backed Shia militia's brazen intervention in the Syria poses the most serious threat yet to the stability of neighbouring Lebanon. It pits Hizbollah directly against cells from the al-Qaeda affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra opposition, risking provoking retaliation on Lebanese soil from local Sunni supporters of the Sunni majority Syrian opposition.

Hizbollah and the Syrian army launched artillery barrages on Qusair city in an attack that began late on Saturday night. Footage from the town shows planes on strafing runs and entire buildings evaporating beneath relentless air strikes.

Syrian and Israeli forces exchange fire over the Golan Heights as conflict spreads:

Syrian and Israeli forces exchanged fire over the Golan Heights on Tuesday and the Lebanese militant group Hizbollah sent more reinforcements to help the Assad regime attack a key border town as the conflict spilled further to the country's neighbours.

The Syrian government for the first time claimed responsibility for cross-border fire, claiming to have destroyed an Israeli military jeep in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Syrian TV reported that the Israeli armoured vehicle had crossed into a demilitarised zone inside Syria's borders near Bir Ajam.

"Our armed forces have destroyed an Israeli vehicle with everything that it had in it. The vehicle had crossed the ceasefire line," a statement issued by the Syrian military asserted.

Israel disputed this account but returned fire with precision Tammuz missiles. Israeli military spokesmen have insisted that the IDF jeep was making a routine patrol along the Syrian border in Israeli-occupied Golan when it was struck. The vehicle sustained only light damage and none of the soldiers inside were harmed, Israel said.

Moshe Ya'alon, Israel's defence minister, said Israel would strike Syria only if Israeli security was threatened. "We do not interfere in what goes on in Syria, or in its civil war," he said. "As for the situation in the Golan Heights, we do not and will not allow any Syrian fire to enter our territory. Last night a Syrian army target was destroyed as a result of such fire."

Syria crisis: Rebels condemn opposition coalition

Rebels on the ground in Syria have launched a blistering attack on the Syrian opposition coalition outside the country. A statement issued by the Revolutionary Movement in Syria said the coalition had failed to represent the Syrian revolution. The criticism comes amid Russian and US efforts to arrange a peace conference on Syria in June.

Syria opposition: no peace talks until Hizbollah and Iran halt their 'invasion'

Syria's main opposition group has said it will not take part in proposed US-Russia peace talks while key allies of President Bashar al-Assad's regime are waging war alongside government forces.

"The National Coalition will not take part in any international conference or any such efforts so long as the militias of Iran and Hizbollah continue their invasion of Syria," the opposition's acting chief George Sabra told reporters in Istanbul.

"Today, Syrians' lives are more important than any political solution or any international conference," Mr Sabra added. It has taken the divided opposition meeting in Istanbul a week to find common ground on the so-called Geneva 2 peace conference proposed by Moscow and Washington in hopes of ending more than two years of conflict estimated to have killed more than 94,000 people.

Syrian civil war claims first British fighter:

A British-born Muslim who is believed to have joined a rebel group in Syria has been killed in an ambush by regime troops, becoming the first known UK citizen to have died fighting in the country's civil war.

 Ali al-Manasfi, 22, from Acton in west London, was shot dead while travelling with an American woman and a third person in Syria's northern Idlib province. A friend of rebel fighters who were with Mr al-Manasfi told The Daily Telegraph that the third person was also a British citizen of “British Indian origin”. Raised a Baptist, Ms Mansfield was believed to have converted to Islam five years ago, and had previously been married to an Arab man. The photographs on her driver's license showed her wearing a tight hijab or Muslim headscarf. Her grandmother, Carole Mansfield, told the Detroit Free Press that Nicole had told her "the best way of life was to be a Muslim. And that women should wear scarves – women should always cover their head." She added that Nicole had "a heart of gold," but was easily influenced by others.
