I listen to lots of progressive rock too raiseyourfist, though not necessarily of the metal variety. I do listen to some progressive metal such as Dream Theater, Riverside, A.C.T, Opeth, Spiral Architect, Symphony X, too many to name really. I also like old school prog like Yes, Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator, and Pink Floyd. I like classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Foreigner, Boston, The Doors, The Beatles, The Who. I like classical, baroque and modern classical of too many composers to name. the list goes on but if you like type of music you have most likely heard of them already

When it comes to music everyone is entitled to their opinion... i personally hate rap and hip hop because i believe there is nothing about most types that i consider as musically talented....
I love Rock because the range is so diverse and really has taken on a different form over the last couple of years... I am also a supporter of ACDC... The greatest Australian band of all time
-
Also does anyone know of any really good Israeli bands that we could promote for JTF?
-
All 50s R&R and 60s/70s pop'. Stop the clock at 1977 when disco came in. That's about 20 years of good music that never dates.
-
Oh boy, where do I start?
Bands that I've listened to recently - HIM, Apulanta, Ace of Base, Abba, Pantera, Hammerfall, System of a Down, Stratovarius, Rob Zombie, Rammstein. Eh, maybe it's easier if I just list by category...
80's
Death/Speed metal/Operatic death (Nightwish)
Techno/Trance/Hardstyle
Italian
Greek/Hebrew
Classical (mainly Baroque and Romantic)
Opera
Christmas music
American patriotic
Alternative (Cold play, Jewel, Kent)
Cheesy pop like Ace of Base and Abba

You are completely correct Scriabin.
You know, it brakes my haert to hear good kids listen to this devil's music!
This music encourages drugs, bad behaviour etc etc, to say the least. Believe me know. But as Scriabin mentioned, I could go on forever listing the negative effects of this rubbish music, and my conclusions onto that.
-
Metal, punk, stuff like Matisyahu, but mostly metal. METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Check out Municipal Waste. Sorry to those that disagree, but loud, ugly music is beautiful ;D
-
Hey Boergeneral,
Didnt SA not have tv until 1976? South Africa was vehimently anti television.
You are perfectly correct cosmo :)
The reason our leaders (back then, they were TRUE leaders) did not want TV's, is because they feared the exposure of evil to their people. And they were spot on!
Imagine if they saw what is on TV these days! They would turn around in their graves!!!!!!
Another interesting thing that was ILLEGAL in SA up until the 80's I think, was pornography. Once again, people did not want to be exposed to such filty and evil.
You see, White South Africans (Boers), are VERY VERY religious people. And we are VERY srong believers in the Tanach/Torah. So really, i suppose one could say that to some extent, Boers are Jewish in a way, except we believe Jesus is the Messiach, and we don't follow ALL of the 613 Laws (but many of those laws are followed by the Boers-because as I say, we are really Tanach Christians).
Am i wrong to say this?
I completely agree with the OLD leaders - Pornography, filth on TV, cigarretes, filth/evil music etc etc, will be illegal if I were to become president of SA, and im sure that the majority of the Boers would agree.

It's not the devil's music, Underoath is a christian band, and that song is about how bad life is if you ignore God.

You ever listen to Pantera?
I heard one song of theirs. It was pretty cool. I don't have any of their material though.

'Classical' music tells all those stories of life, but in rich, vivid color.
Don't be so simplistic. You're relating to the words in the songs. Words are cheap.
Music alone tells us far more than any silly lyrics can. Great music, that is.
-
i know scriabin will disagree but i just cant stand classical music it is so boring i dont like rap either i like classic rock with good guitar solos

Lyrics can be very interesting, and the style of music from underoath fits the lyrics and helps the meaning.
Just to show the broadness of my musical tastes, here's some classical that I like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSFQbsriSts

I was not isolated from music as I grew up, different people like different things, I personally don't particularly enjoy vocal classical music, I think it just sounds a bit weird, in that piece it's definitely not helped by dreadful soloists. That rendition of Oltremare I proovided a link to was a poor recording, sorry, I should have checked it first. Here's a nother piece of 'classical' that I like (this time it isn't a bad recording): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFTCLkd9ZPY
I just can't understand why people don't like underoath, (none of my family likes it, my father goes as far as to describe it as an assault on his ears).

To each his own. You might like Shakespeare, but I think that Steven King is just as good. ;)

Ok...
I listen to the following:
Listed in order of favorites:
1. Genesis
2. Phil Collins (Solo)
3. Peter Gabriel (solo)
4. Depeche Mode
5. Enigma
6. Tears for Fears
7. Loverboy
Then....
1. 80's music in general
2. 70's music in general
3. then modern Alternative Rock (Alanis Morissette, Daughtry, Evanescence, etc.)
Then...
I totally dig techno....
1. DJ Tiesto
2. Sanxion 7
3. Chrystal Method
4. Darude
Then....
I can tolerate the following:
(I actually like Garth Brooks, but almost no one else in Country.)
I take it back...I like Garth Brooks but I can't stand almost any other form of Country/Western music. The twang just kills me...and I can't stand the steel guitar.
Then....
I HATE rap.

dawntreader, what do you think of underoath?
well ftf, I've got to be honest with you. I like the actual music of Underoath. (I went to the YouTube link you provided.) I had never heard of this band before.
As I said, I liked the actual music. However, I didn't like the screaming. I have a very hard time liking anything I can't understand the words to. (This is also why I don't like the early Metallica stuff. I could never understand what they were saying.)
I'm sure if I were still a teenager I might love it. But since I am not, I don't. ;D
In fact, as a teenager I liked rap too. But I hate it now.
-
If you listen to it enough you start being able to understand it. I often sing along to underoath songs.

GG Allin?? ...do you want to shock people? ;)
I'm TRYING to make a point to FTF.
-
Anyway the point i was trying to illustrate here is that we all have different opinions and interests..
We all have a common goal though and we aim to work together to make several changes that need to be made.... however recent instances have expire which has cause problems amongst prominent members on our forum (there are several examples)
Anyway im glad we could discuss other things than what some arab man did to an Israeli girl and What Jefferies said to hasidic jews
... peace out

I like light rock like Coldplay, Greenday and Keane.

I have NEVER seen Green Day placed in the same category as Coldplay and Keane!
-
Greenday , Coldplay and Keane are all light rock.
Now to spice this topic up, some really awesome old underoath: http://youtube.com/watch?v=KsKHL_lcXX8 (please ignore the irrelevant video)
And here are the lyrics for those of you that can't make them out:
It happened all so fast, heavy with sleep my eyes closed.
The next thing i remember was crawling out from the car and seeing you lying there.
Holding your head kissing you for the last time, the taste of blood on my lips.
Your clothes torn apart perfumed with gas, it seems like it was yesterday when the rain poured down.
I can still hear your screams, as if it was happening all over again.
Saturday, december 4th that night would become a grave that would crush my heart.
Joy and laughter exchanged for grief and silence.
Searching for so long to find you and the moment you were ripped from me.
Laying here on this empty shelf never to be read again in these pages lies every memory of you.
The wind blew your heart over my eyes and I slept for days praying not to awake, but these dreams can only last so long.
Facing the day looking through these tears.
I'll always look back and remember that night, as you lay there still, with unmoving eyes.
Looking over that casket seeing your face, times of past rushing by.
Touching your cold hand, wishing it would touch me back.
You look so pretty, lying there, just like the first day we met.
It feels so real, like old times, but it's nothing, it's nothing.
I can taste the stale, air on my tongue and death lights up the sky.
Hope finds itself, it and end, stopping at my thoughts.
Pictures of you, help bring back the tears.
Walking in the present, but living in the past.
How much longer, will I embrace sorrow?
From the moment you entered my life, my whole outlook on love, would, change.
You, brought out a happiness, I didn't even know, I had.
And now you've gone, leaving without, a goodbye.
That glass, heart, that rested, in my, chest, has fallen, and shattered.
Here oh Lord, lies the remains, of a broken, heart.
For I have faith, you can give joy and life, again.
Death has fallen, but love covers, me.
Heaven is now home, to my angel of, love.

i like Rush,Zeplin,Alice in chain,Green day and all soft rock.I like all music, saying that boy bands can do 1..i hate arab sounding music as it drones on about the Apostate.

If the guitar was less driven and the singer actually sang then it might be OK, but not the kind of thing I generally listen to. The beginning reminded me of Linkin Park (this is not a good thing)

I love those first two - hate the latter two. My 5 favorite bands (or singers) are AC/DC, The Who, Rush, Led Zeppelin, and Matisyahu.
-
Also does anyone know of any really good Israeli bands that we could promote for JTF?
I don't know if Chaim would fancy any Israeli bands that we might like other than those that play Klezmer music.
I personally like Safam a lot! I saw them in Concert in Forest Hills, NY several years ago and purchased a couple of their CDs. I'm sure there are other good bands too, but that's the one that comes to mind right away.
-
If the guitar was less driven and the singer actually sang then it might be OK, but not the kind of thing I generally listen to. The beginning reminded me of Linkin Park (this is not a good thing)
Why can I so rarely find anyone who likes the music I like?
-
My favorites include Weezer, Sting/The Police, Van Halen, Bruce Springsteen, and Tears For Fears. My favorite genre is probably Classic Rock, and I hate rap with a passion.
-
Meatloaf and Erasure are among my favorite groups. I like most music from the 80s. It was all downhill from there :( I also like the more mellow stuff like Yanni, Ray Lynch, John Tesh, and Enya. I've been made fun of a lot for these ones, but I don't care :)
-
Forgot to mention Def Leppard and Depeche Mode. Erasure's not bad, but the lead singer is Gay and has Aids.
-

Oh yes, Def Leppard and Depeche Mode! The lead singer has AIDS? I didn't hear that.
-
Yes, I'm pretty sure. Andy Bell I believe is his name. He's been pretty open about being Gay for a very long time, and I believe I read an article a while back that stated he was also HIV positive. You can double check on Google or wikipedia. Anyway, while, I disagree with his moral judgements, on a music level, I do tend to enjoy Erasure's music for the most part. They're somewhat similar to Depeche Mode, especially the earlier music.

Yeah, the New Wave music from the 80s and early 90s was kickass! I dunno what it is. But it seems like some gays have more of a natural talent towards music and art. I don't think I've ever met a hetero male art teacher before :)

Of coarse gays are more artistic.
How can we prove Michaelangelo was queer?
If he was straight, the roof of the Sistine Chapel would have got two coats of off-white.

Tesla is a band i have become very fond of lately...
Anyone who likes reformed classic rock
GET TESLA.. listen to their new album INTO THE NOW
-
Wow, you all just made me feel very old. I have never even heard of half of the bands/groups you are talking about. There are only a few definites for me. Rap is the biggest garbage ever to pose as music. Heavy metal started and ended with Led Zepplin, seeing people here label Zepplin as soft rock makes me feel even older.
Good, 60's and early 70's rock and Motown, Stones, Kinks, Who, Santana, Animals, also Skynard, Doobie Brothers, Doors, Temptations, Four Tops, Al Green, Charlie Parker, Muddy Waters, Rod Stewart(Atlantic Crossing album), Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Pink Floyd to name a few.
Opera singers are talented but I could never get into it.
Doo Wop, 50' rock and roll and classical music I also listen to occasionally.
Disco, which I scorned when it came out, I actually now find myself listening to with nostalgia(70's stuff).
Love patriotic music and revolutionary period Fife and Drums stuff.
Two things I also enjoy that I did not see anyone mention, hope I am not thought to weird, is marching Band music and Swing music.
Not now, but when I was still able, play swing music and you could not keep me off the dance floor.
Unfortunetly though, often I need to ignore the lyrics and just enjoy the music with many many songs.

Aw c'mon... no more metalheads here? :P ;)
If any of you want to just try metal out as a genre and are new to it, probably the very best sampler around is the Freddy vs. Jason sountrack (Roadrunner). Twenty songs, a good mix of what is out there, most of it not frighteningly hard, but with a true death-metal track or two thrown in just so you can see what it is like. ;D

I liked Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc., when I was a teenager. Now, I only listen to great music.

Scriabin, I am not saying I agree with this, but would you consider progressive rock (Pink Floyd etc.) to be the closest thing to classical music in the world of popular music?

Most rock and pop from the 50's, 60's and 70's.
The 80's was a horrible time for rock music. That's when all that noise started to come about.
The 90's pretty much marked the end of good music with the ushering in of the gangster criminal rap music era that has only grown stronger.
I'm also a big fan of film scores. Anything from Danny Elfman and John Williams is just great. I absoutely adore all the Star Wars scores.
-
Country- I love love love country! :) Esp. George Strait, Hankr Jr, Aaron Tippin.
I also like some Israeli pop like Eyal Golan :)
Country music is very modest.

I also love yodeling music!

I listen to great music only.
Classical music is one of the most underappreciated music genres in America, today. You cannot find music like that, today. It's pure beauty and elegance. It's sheer brilliance represented in the form of sound. Nobody in the world today has the capability to compose music like that. Do you think anybody in Germany would be able to write one of the greatest pieces in music history on their deathbed like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? I simply don't think so. It's a variety of brilliance that left this planet long ago.
That's why I listen to John Williams. It's the closest you can come to a classical composer of yesteryear.

I pretty much go for classic rock the most. But I also like some country, punk, heavy metal, classical, etc. No rap or hip hop for me.
As long as it sounds like it was created by someone with a brain and some talent (versus idiot nothings that have a publicity machine shoving it down people's throats), I'm there.
"Joanne" by Mike Nesmith ... "Big Bad John" by Jimmy Dean ... "Touch Me" by The Doors ... "Michelle" by the Beatles ... "She's a Rainbow" by the Rolling Stones ... "Suddenly" by the Motels ... "I'm Your Captain" by Grand Funk Railroad ... "Going to California" by Led Zepplin ... "A Hard Rains A-gonna Fall" by Bob Dylan ........ there must be a million more wonderful, cool, splendid, great songs out there, LOVE 'EM ALL!!!!! O0

My current favourite song is "Watch me Die" by Underoath, I don't know if I can really reccomend it here as it's lyrics can easily be taken as a preaching of the christian message, but then again, the majority here won't be able to get more than a quarter of the words... So yeah, listen to it if you want to: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BMVG3Rn7MlM

That song isn't screamo, it's christian death metal.
The only band of that genre that I listen to regularly is Underoath, as they have lyrics that I like as well as music that I like, most bands that do the that type of music are violently anti-christian, while I can enjoy their music I have to block myself off from the lyrics, so yeah, I basically stick with underoath for that genre, I like some other bands in other genres though, such as FlyLeaf, Greenday and The Clash.
-
Its a bit demeaning relating religious messages....with something called "death metal", well thats an opinion.

I am assuming FlyLeaf are a punk-pop band like Green Day and The Clash... am I right?

Poor leaves.

I was going to say the same thing. What ftf said is an oxymoron. Christian death metal? To me, death metal sounds like the musician is torturing someone...you can't even understand the words they're saying because of the gutteral screaming. Christian music shouldn't sound threatening.
-
Ftf seems to find it more calming then looking at a picture i once posted of a beautiful sunset. So I guess that makes our views opinionated. ;D

Some more good music:
"A love so pure" by Underoath, this song is strongly christian just like "Watch me die", so I guess I can only be reccomending it to the christian members of the forum...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Herl6kyAC44 (This is a really old vid of underoath performing, they don't look like your avergae christians do they, note the black leather and the spikes...)
And now for a change, some flyleaf:
"Cassie" http://youtube.com/watch?v=GadafP9SInQ This song was made in memory of a girl called Cassie who was given the choice of saying she didn't believe in God or dying, she chose to die.

Black Sabbath is the first type of "metal" music. That song on youtube is a mix of Scandinavian death and American death metal..

I remember watching a documentary not too long ago, or perhaps it was a news show centered on the rise of Christian Metal. I couldn't believe my eyes. Here is this kid, covered in tatoos with body piercings and the whole nine yards talking about G-d and Jesus etc. etc. He wanted to build a New Christian Movement.... Good G-d, there's a good role model... ???

I can't see left wing groups associating with underoath, read the lyrics of one of their old songs, "A burden in their hands" and you will soon see what I mean:
"Confusing and scared there is a decision made with this choice a child has to pay
She puts it's life in her hands, and then she destroys it's only chance to become someone in life
You should of thought about the baby before you had sex, because you have destroyed a gift from G-d
You killed, you destroyed
Never will this baby be able to grow up, or show it's love
You'll never hear it say 'I love you, I love you'
G-d does not give you the privilege to carry a child for nothing
When you kill, you destroy that child's dreams and hopes
How innocent a baby is... How can you put it to death?
What if you were aborted... You could of never had life
And now you make a choice to take this child's life because it is a burden in you hands
A burden in your hands
Destroyed out of convenience
They put an end to you life because you're too big a burden and one that they can not have
So they take your life before your first breath
When will it stop, the killings continue
Babies die everyday, because of a pro choice made
Helpless and innocent they are put to death
Then why did the parents choose to plant a seed and then destroy it?
Pray for the people who are killing the kids of tomorrow
How desperately they need Jesus Christ in their hearts
So they take your life because your a burden in their hands
Destroyed our of convenience
They put a end to you life because you're too big a burden and one that they can not have
So they take your life before your first breath,
so they take your life brfore your first breath."

I'm not saying all Christian death metal bands are frauds, some real Christians that just like death metal. I even like non-Christian death metal bands.
-
Counting Crows is the best band ever, in my humble opinion.
-
Their real good no doubt! ;)
-
My wife loves Counting Crows. They need to release new music soon.

what Christian death metal bands are out there? The only ones I am aware of are Living Sacrifice and theAustralian band Mortification.

You know, I have to ask, why these vermin use such pseudonums instead of Jamal Jackson or Leroy Washington or Kunte Kinte? Is it so their own will not be able to locate them and shoot them as per their industry's continual violent gang related crimes/murder? Or is it because it is the bi-product of a sub human "culture" in and of itself? Perhaps if there are any Psychologists on this board they might answer?

I like not-stereotypical rap. For example Run DMC and the Red Hot Chili Peppers

Listen to Scriabin.
Rap, pop, Rock...all that stuff stunts a person's I.Q.

Probably right Scriabin. :)

Probably right Scriabin. :)
Listen to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, it will make you more intelligent.
It changes the brain somehow. I can't explain it, but it does happen.

It does. However it is not necessary all the time to listen to this music. I take the view that there is no need to have a high intellectual level all the time, you can just switch off if you want and listen to trash instead of concentrating at classical music.
Scriabin, I reccomend that you listen to Sigur Ros. I think you would like it, particuarly the songs Starálfur, Gong and Hljómalind. In fact I would reccomend them to anyone looking to chill out.

Utter rubbish
@Scriabin, that is excellent, I like that a lot.
@christianwhitenation, I bet you didn't even listen to what I posted. What I reccomended is high-level intellectual music. It just happens to not be an orchestra. It's not exactly rap music...

That was late Scriabin.
Here is some early Scriabin played (harshly) by a young, Jewish pianist:

That is rather good! Highly impressive. Perhaps not something to listen to every day though...

I like both of those pieces of music, Scriabin, though I prefer by far the second of the two, the first one seemed a bit slow and dull at the start.
What do you think of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH45W3P7im4 (it's rather annoying when people start clapping half way through...)

You must lead a very exciting life, only listening to this dismal excuse for a band.
And that song is only 2 different chords for the first minute. Then the guy starts sounding like he is some kind of insect.
Ironic that my 666th post goes to death metal...

Yes, the first one was too slow.
I don't know what the conductor was doing.

I'm listening Clasic music too; which can be very interesting and fun; I have some MP3s from records of Bethoven, Wagner, Orf and Vivaldi; from more modern music I like Jazz songs of Frank Sinatra and Glenn Miller Band; Film music like the Vangelis, Moricone etc... from metal only Ramstein; I'm afraid when I got the urge to listen to "christian music" I take the Gregorian hores or Bach instead. ;)

It's nothing of the sort, if I wanted it to be rebellious, I wouldn't keep trying to persuade other people to like it, I don't like it because it's different, I like it because I enjoy it, I like the style of music and I loove the lyrics.

That is actually one of the worst ones! Just NOISE!
No discernable chord sequence, nothing there musically, no appeal to just listen to... it amazes me what you get out of this stuff except the "christian message" which to me, roughly translated, reads as:
AAHHHHH RRRRAAAAAHHHHHHH RRRRRAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA etc.

Ah, this if it were not so electronic would be excellent. It has a very clear structure, no noise, would not be hard on the ears.
This is what I believe the mark of a good song is: if it were played by a string quartet would it still sound good. This, yes. UnderOath, no.

I like death metal because it's fast and angry. I can be angry and frustrated a lot.. and Mozart, Ace of Base nor country music will do it for me.
This is an interesting band I like.. they mix polka and Sammi music with death metal. I don't think anyone here would like it though, but it's something different to hear ;)

When he was with underoath, he was clean shaven, had a civilised haircut, and did the some of the best screams, growls and grunts ever heard, anywhere.
Now, with "Maylene and the Sons of Disaster", he has an untidy haircut, an untidy beard, he bassically looks like a hippy, and he sounds like a 60s or 70s punkster.
How is it not funny?

What do you guys know about Rammstein? I ask, because I discovered a youtube video of one of their songs that's set over black and white Nazi footage. It's been said that the national socialist movement "hijacked" their music and that they are really not Nazis.
Even so with everything that has been said and done, is it still okay to listen to them? Or has the damage been done already?

70s and 80s, Def Leppard (saw them with Journey last year, great show) Triumph, Loverboy(yeah yeah I'll admit it) Styx, Damn Yankees, Ted Nugent, Boston, Heart, AC/DC etc. More current, 3 Doors Down, Evanescence, 3 Days Grace....and I will not say who I just went to Vegas to see:P
How funny. I was a big Leppard fan as a kid.
I'm a huge John Williams fan.
No one here mentioned QUEEN. (Superb group, and Freddie Mercury was a Zoroastrian who fled from the Muzzels). Last I heard, Iran was able to ban every western band except Queen)
